POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR


The Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) in the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Swenson College of Science and Engineering (SCSE) invites applications for an Assistant  Professor.  This is a tenure-track position.  The educational and research focus  is  in the areas of energy, power, or power electronics.  The EE Department is the cornerstone department for a college-wide initiative on energy as one of the major research and educational themes  emerging from its strategic planning process.  


UMD is a regional comprehensive land and sea-grant state university, one of five coordinate campuses within the State of Minnesota system and with a total enrollment of approximately 11,500 students.  SCSE is the largest college at UMD comprising over 3100 undergraduate students, 220 graduate students, 180 faculty, and 80 permanent staff.  The college includes the basic science departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences,  Physics and Astronomy, and Mathematics and Statistics.  The college also includes the ABET-accredited departments of Computer Science; and Electrical, Chemical, Civil, and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. The EE Department consists of 12 faculty and 3 staff, with approximately 210 undergraduate students as EE majors, and 20 M.S.E.E  graduate students.    The EE Department is home to minors in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Energy Engineering.    The EE Department is poised for expansion into the areas of energy, power, and power electronics to fulfill regional industrial needs.  There are significant opportunities for fostering existing and creating new ties with local, regional, and national energy industry stakeholders.


DUTIES:   

The candidate must be able to teach EE courses at both the undergraduate level and graduate level  in one or more of the areas of power, energy, and power electronics.  The appointment begins August 20, 2018.  In addition, the successful candidate is expected to conduct research in one or more of the areas of power, energy, and power electronics; advise students;  provide appropriate service to the Department and the profession;  and demonstrate a willingness to interact with the public and private sectors.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph. D. or equivalent terminal degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field by the time of appointment

  • Baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated evidence of a strong potential for research in one or more of the areas of  power, energy, and power electronics; appropriate to an Assistant Professor level appointment

  • Demonstrated evidence of a strong potential for quality teaching appropriate to an Assistant Professor level appointment

  • Teaching experience as a faculty member or graduate teaching assistant

  • Demonstrated effective communications skills appropriate to an Assistant Professor level appointment

  • Willingness to interact with the public and private sectors and/or have industrial experience

  • Pass the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) exam and/or hold a license as a PE (Professional Engineer)
