Description: Description About the Position: The Electric and Energy Industry is going through a significant period of change. National Grid Ventures; a National Grid global line of business; identifies, evaluates, develops, implements, owns and operates various energy solutions and technologies, across electric transmission, utility-scale batteries, distributed energy resources and other large-scale projects, in largely competitive or contracted opportunities. The BD Systems Engineer will be part of the Business Development team and work to evaluate and help find potential opportunities, as well as prepare for and support the entire life-cycle of competitive projects across electric transmission, utility-scale renewable resources and batteries, and potentially DER’s. The BD Systems Engineer will be responsible for the system technical studies, scope development, systems performance, operational benefits and trade-offs, perform the engineering analysis and when necessary, manage or oversee, external consultants or resources retained to perform various technical activities. While this is a highly technical role, the System Engineer in Business Development is expected to have additional knowledge and basic capabilities in various RTO/ISO processes, capacity and energy markets, interconnection requirements and any other applicable tariffs.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to): Create, perform, direct and oversee internal and external technical resources when evaluating National Grid Ventures’ Business Development projects and opportunities; Perform or support production cost modeling (e.g., MAPS/PROMOD/Gridview) and any relevant energy market analysis to assist and inform the identification of project development opportunities; Perform or lead studies to verify constraints and to test solutions to relieve transmission congestion; to evaluate new transmission, non-transmission alternatives, including utility-scale batteries, other innovative solutions; and from time-to-time assist in market entry strategies; Make recommendations and prepare technical and market reports for executive reviews and presentations; Guide Business Development teams on technical and related market issues during negotiations with potential partners or in support of presentations to external evaluation teams.
Qualifications Dimensions: The Systems Engineer will be responsible for modeling and analysis necessary to support development of NGV projects in the Northeast and throughout the US. The Systems Engineer should be versed in various aspects of one or more of the following: Requirements to study, plan, conceptually estimate and assess performance of transmission projects; such as: Dynamic Modelling and Stability Analysis Power flow Modelling and Analysis Generation System Impact and Renewable Energy Grid Integration Good understanding or experience in siting, permitting and other essential implementation aspects of a transmission or utility-scale renewable resource projects One or more RTO/ISO planning or interconnection processes The Systems Engineer should be able to: Lead various analytical or technical functions for NGV BD teams, which may include external partners or suppliers Help cross-train, transfer knowledge, work closely with, or maintain systems, data and tools with National Grid’s Core Utility engineering functions Represent NGV and its interests at any external meetings, such as RTO/ISO’s, State Commissions, Siting Authorities and other stakeholders as appropriate Present or engage in industry forums to raise NGV profile
Knowledge & Experience Required: BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Expert in Bulk Power Systems or Wholesale Power Markets is required. Advanced degree preferred; Minimum of 5 years of experience in systems engineering or related discipline is highly desirable; Knowledge and experience in System Planning, Modeling is required, Production Cost analysis and related tools is ideal; Expertise and hands-on background in power flow simulation software such as PSS/E, TARA, MUST or equivalent; and strong understanding of power flow modeling is required; Knowledge in energy, capacity and renewable competitive markets, transmission congestion, LMPs, FTRs and any RTOs economic or public policy planning processes and tariffs is desirable, with emphasis on Northeast / Mid-Atlantic ISOs. Knowledge or familiarity in systems operations, operations planning and economic dispatch; Likewise, Knowledge of fuel and power market dynamics; economic and environmental regulations related to power sector is desirable;
