Tyndall National Institute is a world-leading research centre in integrated ICT hardware and systems and a part of University College Cork. Specialising in both electronics and photonics – materials, devices, circuits and systems – it is an international leader in its core research areas of:

  • Smart sensors and systems

  • Mixed signal and analog circuit design
  • Microelectronic and photonic integration
  • Semiconductor wafer fabrication
  • Nano materials and device processing.

Central to Tyndall’s mission is delivering economic impact through research excellence. It works with industry and academia to transform research into products in its core application areas of electronics, communications, energy, health, agri-food and the environment. With an annual turnover of circa €35 million, the Institute has almost 500 researchers, engineers, support staff, postgraduate students, interns and industry researchers-in-residence at its Cork campus.

Tyndall is a unique model in Ireland and within Europe, bridging the gap between excellent basic research and practical industrial development. With world-class facilities, and the co-location of the basic and industrially-driven work on a single campus, the Institute provides an especially stimulating environment within which innovation can be fostered, ultimately to the benefit of the Irish economy.

The Chief Executive Officer will play a pivotal role in shaping the future success and strategy of the Institute, and in influencing the public research and innovation environment of Ireland and Europe more broadly. The successful candidate will be a well-regarded figure in the scientific community, and will possess an excellent understanding of the management of science and technology research. With a strong vision and exceptional leadership skills, the post-holder will have a natural ability to command respect and build rapport and trust with a rich network of individuals, diverse groups and strategic partners locally, nationally and internationally.S/he will have a strong international professional network in industry, business and academia and significant experience in the commercialisation of research results. A track record of building, managing and mentoring high-performing teams and proven capabilities in creative problem-solving are essential.
