Cloud Software Engineer - 3D Graphics - Toyota Research Institute

Toyota Research Institute (TRI) is an R&D enterprise designed to bridge the gap between fundamental research and product development. It has been launched with mandates to (1) enhance the safety of automobiles, with the ultimate goal of creating a car that is incapable of causing a crash; (2) increase access to cars to those who otherwise cannot drive, including those with disabilities and the elderly; (3) help translate outdoor mobility technology into products for indoor mobility; and (4) accelerate scientific discovery by applying techniques from artificial intelligence and machine learning. Toyota believes artificial intelligence has significant potential to improve the quality of life for all people, bringing ease, comfort and safety to all aspects of life.

As much code runs inside an autonomous car or robot, more code runs in the cloud. Services and pipelines that process data is what our machine learning, mapping, robotics, and simulation teams build to implement their own initiatives. The cloud platform team is responsible for designing and implementing the set of services, libraries, tools, and dashboards that make this possible. But developer productivity is not our only goal. We think about scale (“consume petabytes of driving data”), governance (“explain through data that our car did the right thing”), and cross-platform execution (“deploy an image-processing service in AWS or inside a robot”). We are looking for engineers that can make this possible.



  • Collaborate with the UX team to turn their visual language into code that animates and reacts to inputs.
  • Design 3D visual components for visualizing maps, complex sensor data to make it easy for teams to examine large datasets.
  • Work with UI engineers to integrate your components into web applications and embedded UIs.
  • Live and breathe the software practices that produce maintainable code, including automated testing, continuous integration, code style conformity, and code review.



  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent with specialization in Computer Graphics.
  • Strong communication skills. Team player. Good Listener.
  • Strong usability design skills.
  • Strong ability to write unit testable code.
  • Strong library and API design skills.
  • Strong OpenGL and/or WebGL technical skills (shaders, animations, particle effects etc).
  • Experience with data loading and visualization.
  • Experience with three.js is a plus.
  • Experience with web Javascript frameworks, especially React.js is a plus.
  • Experience with Docker.
  • Experience with related tools and processes: Git, Continuous Integration, Code Reviews.
