Engineer/Scientist III - Corrosion Engineer 
Charlotte, NC

The Position:
Leads research efforts in particular scientific disciplines or technologies and participates the development and application of products and services in those areas through contractors and departmental or cross-functional teams. Applies technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Develops technical solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. Organizes the external and interdepartmental activities ensuring completion of the project/product on schedule and within budget. May conduct research directly in complex, high impact technical or scientific fields. Assists in the area of Corrosion related to Transmission and Distribution assets.

Job Functions:
Performs advanced engineering/scientific analysis with minimal direction and supervision. Beginning to demonstrate creativity and ingenuity in providing technical solutions. Works directly with EPRI staff and high interaction with members and industry.

• Conducts technical searches and analyzes information in support of the project team.

• Conducts independent research and begins to manage small, less complex projects

• Provides technical advice and counsel to other professionals within EPRI.

• Assists Project/Program managers in assessing customer needs, formulating technical approaches, preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentations.

• Reviews progress and evaluates results. Makes changes in methods, design or equipment where necessary.

• Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment.

 

Education Level and Years of Experience:
Advanced degree in science/engineering or equivalent experience required
Degree in mechanical or materials engineering preferred.
Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required

4-5 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Good verbal and written communication skills

• Required some supervision and guidance to recognize strategic issues and build collaborative projects

• Responsible for the success of individual projects

• Works closely with contractors or staff to complete project research

• May participate in multiple projects

• Individual contributor

• May present research results to advisors or technical staff/members

• Starting to develop technical depth in 1-2 areas

• Focus on projects within a program

The Ideal Candidate:
• Has experience with corrosion of transmission and distribution components.
• Knowledge of corrosion mitigation and protection techniques used in the power industry.
• Experience in performing research.
• Strong interpersonal communication skills
• Strong presentation skills.
• Strong writing skills.
• Willingness to travel 1 to 2 times per month for 2 or more days (both within US and internationally).
• Willingness to undertake field work including testing and measurements.
• Demonstrates project management skills, including the ability to lead a small team.
