Framatome (formerly known as AREVA NP) is seeking an Electrical Engineer for our Component Repair and Replacement (CR&R) organization located in Lynchburg, VA.

Framatome's Reactors & Services Business Group: 

The Reactors and Services Business Group combines the nuclear reactor design and construction activities and the products and services activities necessary for the maintenance, operation, modernization, and improvement of power plants. It also includes vessel propulsion nuclear reactor and research reactor activities. Framatome is currently constructing four EPR™ reactors, of generation III+.     


Component Replacement and Repair (CR&R) develops turnkey solutions for the replacement, remediation and repair of nuclear power plant primary system components, using Mechanical, Electrical, Software, and Computer design skills. Projects include tooling and controls design in support of reactor primary system component replacement, repair, and defect mitigation on such components as Steam Generators, Reactor Vessel Closure Heads, Pressurizers, Primary Piping, and Reactor Vessel Internals.  The CR&R Tooling Design Engineering Group interacts closely with the Field Operations and Component Engineering organizations to implement turnkey solutions for our customers.


Job Description:  

This is very much a hand’s-on, working Engineering environment.  The kind of person that will enjoy this type of work environment is one that likes to take a project from a conceptual design idea through fabrication then take the final system to the field for real world, hands on use.  Our engineering group designs very specific tooling, electrical controls, and software to be used in the repair and replacement of nuclear power plant components.  Some typical applications are for remotely controlled welding tools, Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) tools, surface mitigation tools (i.e. roto peening and water peening), etc

Responsibilities and duties include:     

  • Evaluate present system designs for upgrades and improvements
  • Design controls for tooling, including:
  • Servo & Stepper motor control
  • Electronic circuit board design
  • Embedded processor programming
  • FPGA programming
  • Video
  • Programming for controls (i.e. LabView) and operator interface
  • 3D CAD design of control components & enclosures (i.e. Solidworks)
  • Create wiring schematics using CAD (i.e. OrCAD)
  • Testing and troubleshooting of controls, programming, tools, & equipment
  • Field implementation and support of old and new controls designs
  • Documentation of controls, including Technical Requirements Documents, test procedures, operating manuals and procedures.
  • Candidate should also be flexible enough to support mechanical assembly and support mechanical design engineers. Work will consist of hands-on assembly and CAD.

  • BS in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years engineering experience
  • Electrical engineering controls design experience
  • Experience with computer programming
  • 3D CAD design experience 
  • Proficient with MS Office applications
  • Be a conscientious, team worker and leader.
  • Lead projects and tasks from the beginning of design to field implementation.
  • Action-oriented self-starter with sound work ethic. 


The following requirements are desired and will be used to differentiate all candidates who apply for this position:

  • Electronic circuit board design experience
  • Motion control design experience
  • SolidWorks 3D modelling experience or CAD experience
  • Strong technical learner with intellectual horsepower
  • Works well in a group and with people from a wide variety of educational backgrounds and personalities
  • Willing to work occasional overtime and weekends and holidays.
