Intern Computational Solid Mechanics and Structural Dynamics R&D Graduate Summer

Albuquerque, NM

We are seeking an Intern Summer \- R&D Grad

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Assist in finite element implementations on next\-generation computers \(e\.g\. GPUs\)

+ Be involved with massively parallel solvers, inverse methods \(e\.g\. unknown parameters, topology optimization\), contact algorithms, acoustics, uncertainty quantification, higher order elements, and algorithms for handling big data in large finite element simulations

+ Participate in multi\-scale material modeling, reduced order modeling, and failure modeling \(e\.g\. XFEM, phase field, gradient plasticity\)

+ Work with infinite elements, perfectly matched layers, and Isogeometric, meshless, particle, or polyhedral elements


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Graduate status \(BS or MS\) in a mechanical, civil, aerospace engineering or related engineering curriculum

+ Experience with finite element methods, solid mechanics and structural dynamics engineering software, and Unix operating systems

+ Ability to work in a team environment

Note: If you have not yet started your graduate program, please apply to an undergraduate intern position\.


+ Knowledge of C\+\+, Python, mesh generation tools \(e\.g\., Patran or Cubit\), and post processing tools \(e\.g\., Patran and Ensight\)

Department Description:

The Computational Solid Mechanics and Structural Dynamics Department develops advanced, massively parallel simulation codes for solid mechanics and structural dynamics\. This includes the development of advanced linear and nonlinear solution algorithms, contact mechanics, finite element formulations, and research in advanced computational algorithms for continuum and noncontinuum mechanics\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\.
