Intern - Computational Solid Mechanics and Structural Dynamics R&D Undergrad Summer

Albuquerque, NM

Summer undergraduate student interns are sought to work with our Structural Dynamics and Solid Mechanics finite element code development teams to help test and verify code, conduct research, and develop software and analysis approaches\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Create finite element models

+ Run our solid mechanics and structural dynamics codes on various computing platforms

+ Visualize and post process results

+ Compare results to closed formed solutions or previous solutions

A high degree of creativity will be needed to apply our codes in unusual applications\. Students will work as team members and help each other and the staff on accomplishing these activities\.


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited undergraduate program

+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ A background in mechanical, civil, aerospace engineering or related engineering curriculum

+ Desire to work with solid mechanics and structural dynamics engineering software

+ Desire to learn how to work in Unix operating systems

+ Desire to learn how to create finite element models and post process results

+ Ability to work in a team environment

Note: If you have not yet started your undergraduate program, please apply to a high school intern position\.


+ Exposure to finite element methods and tools

+ Experience with the Unix operating system

+ Experience programming

+ Experience with C\+\+ and Python or willingness to learn

+ Current junior or senior standing as an undergraduate student and completion of strength of materials and structural dynamics courses

Department Description:

The Computational Solid Mechanics and Structural Dynamics Department develops advanced, massively parallel simulation codes for solid mechanics and structural dynamics\. This includes the development of advanced linear and nonlinear solution algorithms, contact mechanics, finite element formulations, and research in advanced computational algorithms for continuum and noncontinuum mechanics\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.
