Intern - Electric Power Systems Research R&D Graduate Summer

Albuquerque, NM

We are seeking an Intern Summer \- R&D Grad

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Develop models of transmission ordistribution systems

+ Analyze PMU data to improve models

+ Develop new control approaches for improving resiliency or reliability

+ Develop new optimization techniques for improving grid operation

+ Develop new control/protection schemes for microgrids with high penetrations of renewable


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Applicant should have obtained a B\.S\. in electrical engineering

+ Applicant should be a graduate student in an electrical engineering program at a U\.S\. university

+ Power systems coursework

+ Familiarity with the electric power grid and smart grid concepts

+ Previous research and publications related to the electric power grid

+ Strong programming skills \(e\.g\., Python, MATLAB, etc\.\),

+ Familiarity with power system modeling tools \(e\.g\., OpenDSS, PSLF, PSS/E, PowerWorld, etc\.\) as well as power system protection

+ Optimization, control theory, and machine learning coursework and experience

+ Microgrid design and control experience

+ DER integration and control

Department Description:

The Electric Power Systems Research Department conducts R&D and advanced analytics to enable the modernization of the nation's electric power grid\. This work includes the development of improved planning and operations methodologies from the bulk system down to end users\. Our capabilities encompass the development and application of advanced algorithmic and computational methods, grid operations, economics, and policy\. Examples of specific core areas include power system dynamics, operational reliability, advanced renewables integration, electricity market development, smart grid technologies and related information analysis, optimal resource expansion, and computationally based decision support\. This department is highly inter\-disciplinary, working collaboratively with universities, utilities, government agencies, and both national and international research organizations\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.
