Intern - Materials Characterization & Performance R&D Undergrad Year Round

We are seeking a year round student intern to support the Surface Analysis Laboratory\. In this position, the intern will support a broad range of Sandia missions\. The intern will be exposed to numerous analytical techniques for materials characterization\. Opportunities to analyze data from various methods and/or to use these techniques will arise in some cases\.



On any given day, you may be called on to:



+ Operate scanning kelvin probe, X\-ray fluorescence, and/or electron spectroscopy

+ Utilize optical microscopy and glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy

+ Sample a variety of materials such as semiconductors, polymers, ceramics, and metals

+ Participate in publications, technical societies, and presentations as opportunities arise



Required:



You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:



+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program

+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship



Additional Requirements:



+ Pursuing a bachelors degree in engineering, physics, materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, or a related field

+ Competency with the use of desktop computers and common relevant software \(Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook,etc\.\)

+ Experience working collaboratively in a team setting



Desired:



+ Experience in operating vacuum equipment, characterization instrumentation, or an aptitude for working with hardware and instrumentation

+ Experience with LabView or similar programs

+ Effective interpersonal and oral/written communication skills

+ Experience in and/or ability to organize tasks to enable work on multiple projects simultaneously

+ Detail\-oriented mindset

+ Good hands\-on, troubleshooting, and/or problem\-solving skills

+ Ability and desire to work independently



Department Description:



The Materials Characterization & Performance Department supports Sandia by developing and applying a breadth of analytical techniques to assess the structure, composition, and properties of materials\. We serve our customers by helping them understand material behavior and performance, develop improved materials for specific components and applications, as well as develop lifetime performance predictions for materials\. By applying a breadth of techniques, including spectroscopic and diffraction techniques, light and electron microscopy, metallography, surface analysis, chemical analysis, and contaminant analysis, we provide materials understanding and solutions for: engineering components and structures, failure analysis of all types of materials, and research projects across a wide customer base\. We serve the entire corporation in their material analysis needs and frequently other federal agencies and industry\. We also act as a gateway to materials characterization capabilities within and outside of Sandia\. Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
