Intern - Surety Mechanism Design R&D Undergrad Co-op

We are seeking a mechanical engineering co\-op student to join our team of mechanism design engineers\. Our team is responsible for the full life cycle of surety component development, production, and on\-going surveillance assessment of stockpile devices\. Surety components play a critical role in assuring the safety and security of the nations nuclear deterrent in a wide range of environments including severe accident scenarios\. These devices include electro\-mechanical switching mechanisms and environmental sensing devices that involve complex mechanical interactions in assemblies of over 100 custom designed/built piece parts\. The selected individual would be expected to work in multiple phases of the product development cycle as part of a larger product realization team \(PRT\)\.



On any given day, you may be called on to:



+ Develop design concepts using Computer Aided Design \(CAD\) software

+ Participate in design down\-selects

+ Analyze designs using hand calculations, finite element analysis \(FEA\), and rigid body dynamics \(RBD\) software

+ Develop, build, and operate laboratory test equipment

+ Interpret and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing \(GD&T\) to product design definition

+ Conduct drawing reviews with drafting, manufacturing, and design engineers

+ Assemble prototype and developmental hardware

+ Review inspection results to verify product compliance with requirements

+ Support product disposition during production through engineering analysis

+ Develop and execute test plans and acceptance procedures

+ Investigate anomalies and resolve through analysis and test based methods

+ Present designs, tests results, and findings to the PRT

+ Document work in formal reports and memos

Required:



You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:



+ Undergraduate student at an accredited university

+ Enrolled full time in the term immediately preceding the internship

+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major

+ Registration with the university's co\-op office

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week

+ U\.S\. citizenship



Additional Requirements:



+ Current enrollment in an accredited program in pursuit of a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering or other highly relevant science, engineering or mathematics \(SEM\) discipline



Desired:



+ Strong interest in mechanical design

+ Experience in the fabrication, assembly, or inspection of mechanical products

+ Familiarity with CAD, engineering analysis, and materials characterization techniques

+ Basic proficiency with tolerance analysis methods

+ Excellent communication skills including the ability to prepare clearly\-written reports and briefings



Department Description:



We are a mechanical engineering group responsible for safety and security mechanisms \(components\) for Nuclear Weapons \(NW\) applications\. The departments have responsibility for conceptual design, full\-scale engineering development, product characterization, product qualification, component production support, and on\-going surveillance\. Mechanisms for which the departments have design responsibility include unique signal strong links, environmental sensing devices, and weapon release detection switches\.

Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
