Intern - Water Power Technologies R&D Undergrad Summer

We are seeking an Intern Summer \- R&D Undergrad

An ideal candidate will utilize basic principles of physics and engineering to research marine hydrokinetic \(MHK\) devices; both Wave Energy Converters \(WECs\) and Current Energy Converters \(CECs\), such as tidal and river turbines, are currently studied at SNL\. The major research areas we are currently involved in are: environmental assessment of large scale arrays \(WECs and CECs\), wave energy resource assessment, nearshore wave and circulation modeling improvements, the development of WEC power performance models, offshore wind platform development, and specialized component models \(i\.e\. mooring, power take off, computational fluid dynamics, materials, etc\.\) for both WECs and CECs\. Students with related experience in modeling and simulation or other renewable energy technologies will also be considered\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Model ocean wave/currents resources and marine hydrokinetic devices using numerical models in computer programs such as MATLAB, SWAN, DELFT3D, OpenFOAM, STAR\-CCM\+, and others

+ Analyze data collected from remote sensors and/or wave tank experiments

+ Meet with other interns and engineers to plan work and present results

+ Write technical papers and reports


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited undergraduate program

+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship

Note: If you have not yet started your undergraduate program, please apply to a high school intern position\.

Additional Requirements:

+ General knowledge of: fluid dynamics, ocean waves, ocean currents, tidal/river dynamics, floating bodies \(statics and dynamics\), and MHK device archetypes

+ Advanced knowledge of: floating bodies \(statics and dynamics\), fluid dynamics, statistics, differential equations

+ Required software knowledge: Matlab, Microsoft office suite

+ Demonstrated capability in modeling a dynamic system

+ An interest in alternative energy and marine hydrokinetic devices specifically

+ Flexible to take on new challenges in subsystem and system design

+ Ability to work in a team environment

+ Skills in communication and technical writing


+ Desired software knowledge: 3\-D CAD \(solidworks preferred\), Python, fortran, WAMIT/AQWA, OrcaFlex, CFD RANS Solvers \(OpenFoam, StarCCM\+, CFX, etc\.\), SWAN, FVCOM, DELFT3D, EFDC, WAVEWATCHIII, ANSYS

Department Description:

Sandia's Water Power Technologies Department performs research and development to improve performance, lower costs, and accelerate the deployment of water power technologies\. The primary focus area of the department's work is Marine Hydrokinetics \(MHK\) research with lower levels of effort in Offshore Wind \(OW\) and Hydropower\. The department is responsible for all aspects of Marine Hydrokinetic device design, performance, system reliability, system integration, and environmental evaluations for the Department of Energy's Wind and Water Power Technologies Office and in collaboration with industry partners\. Offshore Wind Energy activities currently include Vertical Axis Wind Turbine \(VAWT\) design and analysis and foundation scour\. Hydropower efforts focus on seasonal simulation and optimization\. Through partnerships with industry, academia, other National Labs, and public dissemination of results, Sandia serves an important role in energy security for the nation

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\.
