About the Position:

Reporting to the Director of Group Technology, the Lead Principal Analyst will work closely with the US lines of business to identify/understand their business needs that can be addressed through new technologies or innovative business models, and assist in exploring potential solutions to improve business performance. The Principal Analyst will partner with the US business development team on new business opportunities leveraging new technologies or innovative business models that can be pursued. This role will also interface with his/her peers in the UK to gain synergies from knowledge transfer across all of National Grid’s businesses. The primary area of focus for the Principal Analyst will be energy storage and related technologies.
The Group Technology Team is a global team, located in the US and UK, that focuses on generating commercial opportunities, addressing end customer needs and providing insight into innovative technologies by enabling partnerships between business groups within National Grid, Energy Impact Partners (EIP) and the global energy technology ecosystem. EIP is a collaborative strategic investment platform that provides capital to companies optimizing energy consumption and improving sustainable energy. National Grid is a limited partner with both strategic and financial interests in EIP. The position is located in Greater Boston, MA.

Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

· Strategic responsibilities:

· Work closely with the US Strategy team and leaders from the US business; participate in technology related strategy projects

· Act as a center of excellence and thought leader on emerging technologies and innovative business models which may impact National Grid’s business models, with a primary focus on energy storage.

· Maintain the company’s “house view” on energy storage technologies, including an outlook for future cost and performance improvements.

· Encourage, promote and challenge existing thinking on technology and innovation, engaging the organization to “find a better way”

· Lead the advancement of National Grid’s analytical capabilities with respect to identifying storage opportunities, developing projects and optimizing the operation of storage assets. Work with internal stakeholders and external consultants (e.g. EPRI, BNEF etc.) to develop an analytic toolkit for storage.

Commercial responsibilities

· Support the business in business cases development for new technologies or innovative business models that offer the promise of increasing customer and shareholder value, with a primary focus on energy storage

· Assist the US business development team in pursuing technology-driven business opportunities, with a primary focus on energy storage

· Act as the point person for external relationships with technology vendors and trade associations related to energy storage (e.g. Energy Storage Association)

· Knowledge sharing and partnering responsibilities

· Communicate business needs and technology insights to other peers within Group Technology and help facilitate information sharing across the US and UK businesses and business development teams

· Enable a coordinated approach for third party technology relationships across businesses and geographies

· Assist the Ventures team in maximizing the value of National Grid’s investment in Energy Impact Partners (EIP) by facilitating connections between EIP and companies of potential interest to National Grid.


Knowledge & Experience Required:

· Undergraduate degree in Science or Engineering required, Advanced degree/MBA preferred

· Experience in the commercial aspects of emerging technology and innovation in the energy/utility sector.

· The candidate’s experience should ideally come from working at a consulting firm focused on the energy/utility sector, or else come from working at a utility.

· Experience and understanding of the US energy sector, regulatory/technology/business issues impacting the industry and future trends.

· Successful track-record of engaging external partners and internal customers concerning emerging T&I opportunities.

· Understanding of financial concepts and ability to model business scenarios (including pro-forma financial impacts) to support the business in obtaining budgets for emerging technology investments

· Demonstrated project management skills and an analytical approach to problem solving

· Excellent presentation skills and ability to convey complex/technical content in a coherent and compelling story for audiences with varying levels of technology savvy.

· Comfortable working in a matrix organization and effectively engaging with multiple stakeholders at various levels in the organization

· Ability to establish relationships within a global business and provide subject-matter expertise and advice relevant to specific business needs

· Demonstrated ability to constructively influence decisions and collaboratively evolve the status quo, requiring adaptability to act as a leader, a facilitator and a participant
