Materials Science R&D Technologist (Entry/Mid-Career))

Albuquerque, NM
:

The neutron generator enterprise utilizes ceramics, metals, polymers and thin films to make devices that operate at the limits of materials performance\. Materials related issues can limit the performance of existing devices, and must be fully understood before implementing new designs\. Therefore, the Analytical Technologies Department is seeking a high performing individual with a strong motivation and hands\-on ability to operate final dimensioning and sample preparation tools to support our customers\. On a weekly basis, your time will be split approximately 50%\-50% between the final dimensioning lab, and the sample preparation lab\. You will own and operate the final dimensioning lab\. This involves working safely with manual final dimensioning tools and interfacing with internal customers to complete various prototype jobs, custom work, and equipment and hardware modifications that they need\. In the sample preparation lab, you will cut, grind, polish and etch samples and production hardware for examination by technical staff\. Depending on interest and performance, there is potential to grow and increase your impact in both roles\.

Required:

+ High school diploma plus three or more years of directly related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience\.

+ Experience using manually operated machine tools to prototype and modify metal, ceramic and polymer hardware and assemblies

+ Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-Level security clearance and a Radiation Worker II certification\.

Desired:

+ Ability to communicate well with customers, understand their needs, and provide solution

+ Ability and willingness to obtain Green Belt Certification/Lean Six Sigma training\.

+ Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, effectively plan and manage work assignments and schedules, and to take the initiative for continuous improvement\.

+ Ability to work safely and securely according to SNL ES&H and Security Requirements\.

+ Active DOE security clearance\.

Department Description:

The Department consists of laboratories specializing in defect/failure analysis, surface analysis, radiochemistry, metallurgy and Ceramics, wet\-chemistry and instrumental analysis, gas dynamics and mass spectrometry and particulate contamination control\. We provide technical expertise, consultation and analysis capabilities required to support the Centers mission\. The department currently operates a TEM, several SEMs, Auger and XPS equipment, mass spectrometers, Raman, FTIR, ICP, DTA, TGA, TMA tools, and several other specialized capabilities including a final dimensioning lab\. A large fraction of the work of the department is with tritium\-contaminated materials, and is supported by several Ph\. D\. level staff, and technologists\.
