The mechanical engineer will support the Advanced Programs Environmental Controls and Life Support System (ECLSS) team in the design, analysis, and integration of ECLSS products as part of the NextSTEP BAA study for a Deep Space Gateway and the advancement of internal development activities. The engineer will perform functional analysis and trade studies of the proposed ECLSS and thermal system designs to assist the lead ECLS engineer in the validation of the designs. Additionally, the engineer will perform consumable analysis of the ECLSS oxygen, nitrogen, water, and coolant subsystems, create and implement basic system control algorithms, and perform optimization for coolant and cabin air temperature, CO2 and humidity control. The engineer will support the design and analysis of an active thermal control system for a deep space habitat as well as the development of hardware components, including proof of concept demonstrations. The engineer will collaborate with team members for the integration of ECLSS products into a habitat, including design and packaging of components, mass and electrical properties, software control, and logistics modeling

The ideal candidate will be able to research physical and chemical properties from various sources, develop and execute analysis models with different tools, and present and articulate their analysis written and verbally to different internal and external customers. The candidate is required to be thorough, with good attention to detail and a solid understanding of documentation methods and requirements

Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering
• mechanical design experience
• Demonstrated experience with space related materials and processes
• Experience with fluid systems and thermal/fluids analysis and software
• Experience with design/development of flight hardware
• Experience in the development of technical reports or specifications
• Verification methods, planning, and execution experiene
• Demonstrated ability to work within multidisciplinary product development teams
• Demonstrated commitment to development and deployment of productivity improvements and leveraging new technologies
• Hands on manufacturing and/or assembly experience
• Experienced in interfacing successfully with customer representatives and demonstrated excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills

Desired skills
• Understanding of electro-mechanical systems
• Verification methods, planning, and execution experience
• Proficient with CAD modeling, drafting and release with working knowledge of ASME Y14.5
• Experience with thermal desktop
• Experience with Simulink
• Skills in computational fluid dynamics and software
• Solution-Centric problem-solving methodology
• Pro/Engineer Creo and CAD data management (EPDM) experience
• Using CAD model as record of authority (Data Set Rating 4 and/or 6) experience
• Familiarity with Lockheed Martin specifications/tools/procedures
• Manufacturing/test oversight experience
• Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) experience
• Experience with Environmental Control and Life Support System Designs
• Knowledge of additive manufacturing
• Familiarity with Model Based Systems Engineering approach
• Additional Engineering Tools: IDEAS, MATLAB, SAP (Qnotes), Python, Simulink
• International trade / export control experience
