The Mechanical Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, invites outstanding faculty candidates to apply for multiple full-time tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant or associate professor levels. Senior hires will be considered for exceptional candidates with the potential to lead major national center-level activities in the near future.

The Department seeks to build on its existing strengths in fluid mechanics, composites materials, cell mechanics, or robotics and control. Candidates with a strong background in these areas are encouraged to apply. Please note that the individual’s potential to conduct research and innovate in these four areas is more important than the specific area of sub-specialization.

Fluid Mechanics - Turbulent flows, multi-phase flows, multi-scale modeling, and biomedical flows

Composite Materials - Modeling, design, fabrication, joining, flaw detection and characterization, computation and data science

Robotics and Controls - Human/robotic interaction, automated assembly, system autonomy, machine learning, digital and additive manufacturing, and prosthetics

Cell Mechanics - Tissue engineering, mechanobiology, morphogenesis, biomechanics, stem cell biology, and/or regenerative medicine. This position is aligned with the Institute of Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine (ISCRM) at the University of Washington. Candidates with a strong background and interests in the general area of engineering applied to the health sciences are also encouraged to apply.

We are seeking exceptional candidates with the potential to develop a high-impact research program with national and international recognition and impact.  Candidates will also be expected to present how they will contribute to an innovative undergraduate curriculum, and develop graduate courses in their areas of expertise. 

Requirements

Applicants must have a PhD or other equivalent doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline by the date of appointment and excellent communication skills. The successful applicant will be expected to provide innovative, high-quality teaching; to develop a vigorous, externally-funded research program; and to contribute to the goals and missions of the department, college, and university. These positions are contingent on budgetary approval.

The Mechanical Engineering department’s research and teaching portfolio covers all aspects of the broad field of mechanical engineering, including interdisciplinary work in engineering in medicine, robotics and controls, materials, advanced manufacturing, and alternative energy. The department currently has 39 full-time tenured, tenure track and research faculty, 372 undergraduates, 160 masters students, 110 PhD students and 17 postdoctoral researchers and continues to grow.  More information about the ME department is available at http://www.me.washington.edu.
