Postdoctoral Appointee - Linear Systems Solvers

Albuquerque, NM

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to join our highly collaborative, multi\-disciplinary teams of mathematicians, engineers and computer scientists developing solvers and preconditioners for large linear systems\. This role offers the opportunity to engage in fundamental research in numerical linear algebra and to develop high\-performance implementations in the Trilinos solvers framework\. Particular emphasis will be on algorithms that scale well to high core counts on next generation architectures\. The scalable algorithms team at Sandia is actively considering a number of research topics to address these challenges\.

Topics of particular interest include:

+ iterative solvers and preconditioners for large linear systems

+ asynchronous iterative methods

+ hierarchical low\-rank methods

+ domain decomposition methods

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Conduct basic research in numerical linear algebra

+ Implement high\-performance, portable C\+\+ numerical algorithms in Trilinos, in both distributed and shared\-memory parallel environments

+ Communicate your research in peer\-reviewed journal publications and conference presentations


+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in mathematics, computer science, or related engineering or science discipline

+ Experience with numerical linear algebra

+ Experience in advanced object\-oriented programming in C\+\+

+ Experience with scalable linear solver techniques

+ Experience conducting research as evidenced by presentations, technical publications, released software, and/or work with applications


+ Experience in one \(or more\) of the areas: asynchronous iterations, hierarchical \(low\-rank\) methods, or domain decomposition

+ Experience utilizing C\+\+ component software libraries for scientific software development

+ Experience in parallel programming such as MPI, Kokkos, OpenMP, CUDA and/or threads

+ Experience in high\-performance computing on distributed, parallel computing architectures

+ Experience in high\-performance computing on Intel Xeon Phi and NVIDIA GPU architectures

+ Experience developing or working with Trilinos or a comparable scientific software library

+ Experience working in collaborative software development environments

Department Description:

The Scalable Algorithms Department at Sandia National Laboratories is focused on developing new algorithms and approaches to address the challenges posed by next\-generation computing hardware\. The department intends to use its expertise in applied mathematics and computational science to address these challenges and help define the future of computing\. Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.
