R&D Computer Engineer-Data System Design (Experienced)

Department 2257, ISE Planning, Information, and Data Systems is responsible for the network design, maintenance, sustainment and health of the Integrated Stockpile Evaluation Data System\. This data system comprises classified and unclassified network enclaves, managed by 2250 per approved security plans\. The department works together with The Air Delivered Weapon Systems Tester Development Department \(02256\) and the Ballistic Missile Tester Development Department \(02255\) which are responsible for the design, development, qualification and deployment of complex system testers and test equipment in support of the Nuclear Security Enterprise\. Specifically, these testers and test systems acquire and deliver data to the Nuclear Weapon Stockpile Surveillance Program\. That data is then delivered to the final storage repository using our locally managed network architecture\.

On any given day, you could be asked to:

+ Troubleshoot network and software problems in multi\-node environment

+ Oversee the execution of security measures called out in the security plan to include timely scans of network resources and software patches

+ Develop software for qualified testers as well as diagnostic utilities

+ Work with a highly technical team to perform stockpile evaluation tests while learning about the United States Nuclear Security Enterprise, nuclear weapon design and function, and the role of Sandia National Laboratories

+ Interface with other design engineers, systems engineers, and subject matter experts in the performance of your design duties

+ Troubleshoot and modify legacy software in Java, C, C\#, bash script, Python, Lua

+ Configure and install operating system and application software on bare\-metal computers

+ Act as on\-call support for network issues

+ Act as on\-call support for data transmittal issues

+ Incorporate new design tools and approaches into our ever\-improving design processes

+ Learn about the United States Nuclear Weapons complex and the role of Sandia National Laboratories

+ Be called upon to peer review other software design efforts and concepts within the Labs

+ Work with a highly technical team to perform stockpile evaluation tests

+ Create and maintain software documentation and updates


+ Bachelors and advanced degree \(Masters or PhD\) in an engineering or technology discipline

+ Two years relevant experience

+ Proficiency in Linux based operating systems \(Ubuntu and Red Hat\)

+ Active, and ability to maintain, US DOE Q security clearance or DOD equivalent


+ Degree in computer science, computer engineering or related field;

+ Experience developing and executing Operations and Maintenance procedures\.

+ Experience in in network configuration and troubleshooting through layer 3\.

+ Experience in IT Infrastructure maintenance including cyber security, patching, anti\-virus and scanning\.

+ Experience in the design, development, and qualification of software for complex testers and test systems;

+ Experience in software requirements analysis, software qualification plan development, and supporting large scale testing of complex systems;

+ Experience with analyzing existing software and troubleshooting software issues;

+ Basic proficiency in software languages like Java, C, C\#, bash script, Python, Lua;

+ Working knowledge of generating software development plans;

+ Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills;

+ Demonstrated ability to team across disciplines;

Department Description:

Organization 2257 manages the Integrated Stockpile Evaluation \(ISE\) as a program driven to understand all aspects of stockpile systems to ensure that the nuclear weapon stockpile is known, with increasing certainty to be safe, secure, reliable and effective both now and into the future\. ISE integrates a variety of stockpile evaluation programs and focuses on contributing to the transformation of US nuclear weapons stockpile and complex\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance to start\.

Position requires an active Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance or active clearance with another US government agency, e\.g\., DOD, to be considered for this position\.
