R&D Laboratory Support Technologist (Early/Mid-Career)

We are seeking a R&D Laboratory Support Technologist for the Metallography/Sample Prep Lab\. The laboratory supports a broad range of Sandia missions by preparing material samples for examination, testing, and research\. A breadth of customers and challenges are brought to this lab daily; samples may include a variety of materials such as semiconductors, polymers, ceramics, and metals\. Samples prepared in this lab have direct mission impact by enabling subsequent analysis, testing, imaging, or characterization critical to answering both fundamental and applied science questions\. In this role, you will have the opportunity to make important contributions in support of the Department's growing research and forensics\-related activities\.



Key functions include, but are not limited to:



+ Cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching samples for examination

+ Preparing samples for optical and electron microscope imaging, spectroscopy, and other characterization methods

+ Preparing material and component samples to enable understanding the root cause of material/component performance, behavior, and/or failure

+ Maintaining equipment through coordinating servicing and repair

+ Working occasional overtime to meet program deadlines

+ Collaborating with other lab team members to meet deliverables and ensure team success



Required:



+ High school diploma or equivalent

+ Experience working in a laboratory

+ Experience working collaboratively in a team setting

+ Must have a minimum of a DOE L clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

+ Experience writing operational procedures

Department Description:



The Materials Characterization & Performance Department supports Sandia by developing and applying a breadth of analytical techniques to assess the structure, composition, and properties of materials\. We serve our customers by helping them understand material behavior and performance, develop improved materials for specific components and applications, as well as develop lifetime performance predictions for materials\. By applying a breadth of techniques, including spectroscopic and diffraction techniques, light and electron microscopy, metallography, surface analysis, chemical analysis, and contaminant analysis, we provide materials understanding and solutions for: engineering components and structures, failure analysis of all types of materials, and research projects across a wide customer base\. We serve the entire corporation in their material analysis needs and frequently other federal agencies and industry\. We also act as a gateway to materials characterization capabilities within and outside of Sandia\. Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance to start\.



Position requires an active Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted L\-level security clearance or active clearance with another US government agency, e\.g\., DOD, to be considered for this position\.



Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
