R&D Manager, Scalable Algorithms (1426)

We are seeking a Manager to lead the Scalable Algorithms department \(1426\) within the Center for Computing Research and the Extreme Scale Computing group\. This team conducts world\-class research and development in computational algorithms, mathematics and computational science to address national\-scale challenges in security, energy, and earth systems\. We deploy our research to customers through cutting\-edge scientific and engineering software toolkits and work closely with developers on implementation in advanced simulation applications\. Our core areas of competency are in performance portability, combinatorial scientific computing including dynamic load balancing, iterative linear solvers and preconditioners, and graph analytics\. The primary focus of the department is advancing high\-performance computing at extreme scales for our mission applications\. We work very closely with architecture and system software teams within the Extreme Scale Computing Group \(1420\), researchers within the Computational Sciences & Math Group \(1440\), and computational simulation groups in Engineering Sciences \(1500\) and Electrical and Radiation Sciences \(1300\)\.

On any given day, you will be responsible for:

+ Filling a critical role as a member of the Center 1400 and CSRI management teams in managing subprograms and projects within ASC and ASCR, as well as potentially LDRD and SPP projects

+ Overseeing a portfolio of ASC projects in computational algorithms for current production and next generation simulation codes

+ Stewarding Trilinos, which is a critical capability portfolio of computational solvers and algorithms used throughout the ASC and ASCR communities, as well as in industry and academia

+ Developing and implementing unifying research strategies across mission area portfolios through proactive mission engagement

+ Strengthening partnerships to enrich relationships, leverage strengths, and amplify our mission impact

+ Promoting a diverse work environment that reflects computer science community strengths

+ Coordinating recruitment, selection, training, performance assessment, work assignments, salary, and recognition and disciplinary actions

+ Ensuring a culture that promotes safety and security, as well as a diverse and inclusive work environment


+ PhD in mathematics, computer science, or related engineering discipline

+ Bachelors degree in a STEM discipline

+ Eight years experience

+ Experience leading R&D teams and in application of new technologies to meet mission/customer needs

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance


+ Two years leadership experience

+ Demonstrated ability to deliver quality R&D products to customers

+ Demonstrated ability to motivate teams of researchers

+ Demonstrated ability to take initiative

+ Demonstrated ability to develop strategies and execute plans in a collaborative way

+ Research experience as evidenced by presentations, technical publications, released software, and/or work with applications

+ Experience in scientific software development

+ Experience in high\-performance computing on distributed, parallel, and/or other specialized architectures

+ Knowledge of Sandias suite of high\-performance computing tools and codes

+ Excellent interpersonal and communications skills to enable effective teamwork and positive customer interaction

Department Description:

The Scalable Algorithms Department at Sandia National Laboratories is focused on developing new algorithms and approaches to address the challenges posed by next\-generation computing hardware\. The department intends to use its expertise in applied mathematics and computational science to address these challenges and help define the future of computing\. While mission driven and focused, the Scalable Algorithms Department performs most of its research in the public domain, which affords the top research and development professionals in the department the opportunity to publish in the open literature and effectively team with leaders at other labs, universities, and industry\.

We support and collaborate with organizations across Sandia, and, through the Computer Science Research Institute \(CSRI\), we act as a conduit for collaboration with the external community including universities, other government labs, and industry\. We have a diverse set of customers and sponsors, including the NNSA weapons programs \(primarily through the Advanced Simulation and Computing \(ASC\) Program\), and the DOE Office of Science \(through the Advanced Scientific Computing Research \(ASCR\) Program\)\. The department is comprised of technical staff and postdocs housed primarily in the CSRI within Sandias Science and Technology Park\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
