R&D Mechanical Engineer (Early/Mid-Career)

We are seeking a R&D Mechanical Engineer to join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team with a focus on solid mechanics, nonlinear dynamics, and coupled thermal\-mechanical finite element analysis\. This teams work covers the full spectrum of the research \- development \- applications domain, and the initial focus of this role will be applications work\. This is a great opportunity for an individual to engage with knowledgeable interdisciplinary teams and fill a unique broad\-based role, with an opportunity to develop new theories and methodologies involving the application of nonlinear dynamics, multi\-scale and coupled\-physics approaches, and uncertainty quantification for mechanical components\.



Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:



+ Teaming with in\-house \(high\-fidelity multi\-physics\) code development teams

+ Working on very challenging problems utilizing world\-class computational resources

+ Working with teams to perform finite element analysis for mechanical components in dynamic environments

+ Engaging with customers to understand requested work and resources needed

+ Working on mechanical shock/vibration analysis, functional analysis, optimization analysis and model validation



Required:



+ Bachelors in a STEM discipline

+ Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field

+ Experience with structural dynamics, nonlinear dynamics, continuum mechanics, strength of materials, or solid mechanics

+ Excellent communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a US Department of Energy security clearance



Desired:



+ PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field

+ Ability to set priorities and manage multiple work efforts

+ Ability to work independently, with the ability to integrate effectively into a collaborative environment

+ Extensive knowledge and experience of computer programming and code development with object\-oriented languages, Python and C\+\+

+ Experience with finite element modeling techniques

+ Knowledge of numerical analysis software and finite\-element meshing tools

+ Background in statistics, probability theory and uncertainty quantification

+ Experience in constitutive model development

+ Experience with multi\-physics and multi\-scale analyses ranging from the atomistic to the continuum

+ A demonstrated commitment to engineering excellence and continuous improvement

+ An active DOE clearance is highly desired



Department Description:



The Component Science and Mechanics Department conducts frontier mechanics research and science\-based engineering solutions for component development and assessment\. Focus areas for the department include interfacial and micro/nano\-mechanics, probabilistic mechanics and uncertainty quantification, and mechanical aspects of component and subsystem reliability\. Areas of active interest include: interconnects and encapsulation, fatigue and fracture, energy dissipation at contacts, micro\-structural mechanics, shock and vibration, crack initiation and propagation, micro\-scale diagnostics, and adaptive structures\. Computational and physical simulations, including solid mechanics and structural dynamics for both linear and non\-linear systems, are utilized in a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment\.

Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
