The Severe Accident Analysis Department is seeking a R&D, Nuclear Engineer\. This technical staff position requires the ability to perform critical studies in a wide range of nuclear safety facility issues and applications, including severe accidents in commercial nuclear power plants or other nuclear facilities, and the characterization of radiological source terms associated with such accidents\. Deep understanding of severe accident phenomena and radiological consequences is required to develop technical reports, publications, and regulator guidance for a wide range of customers including Federal agencies such as the US Department of Energy, and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, domestic customers, and international customers, which include both regulatory and industrial commercial entities\.



On any given day, you may be called on to:



+ Apply computer codes used in nuclear safety and hazards/risk analyses including MELCOR, RELAP, MACCS, RASCAL, etc\. to the analysis or severe accidents in commercial nuclear power plants, spent fuel pools, or in the interpretation of experimental programs aimed at validating the computer codes\. A recent activity in this department has been in the interpretation of the accidents at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in 2011, where these investigations have involved forensic type code applications;

+ Work with or direct teams of researchers to perform nuclear facility analyses;

+ Develop new code models and document results in quality reports, technical publications and presentations;

+ Serve as a technical resource to junior staff on modeling issues related to nuclear power plant operation, drawing on prior experience;

+ Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to accomplish the aspects of the position;

+ Interact with both internal and external customers, both domestic and foreign, and lead/direct teams of expert researchers in the conduct of nuclear safety studies, advanced risk assessments, complex system analysis, big data analysis, and research into severe accident phenomena;

+ External customer interaction is an important aspect of this position\.



Required:



+ Bachelor's degree in a relevant STEM discipline;

+ Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or relevant science/physics discipline;

+ Eight or more years of relevant experience with significant prior experience in nuclear reactor safety assessment;

+ Severe accident analysis, and application of codes such as MELCOR, MAAP, and RELAP, etc\.;

+ Experience in research environments;

+ Experience in project management and team leadership;

+ Experience in customer management;

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance \(Not required to start\)\.



Desired:



+ PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or relevant science/physics discipline;

+ Project management and team leader experience;

+ Experience working with internal/external customers and managing their needs \(i\.e\., DOE, NRC, domestic, and international\);

+ Proficiency/experience with neutronics codes, particle transport codes and burnup codes such as MCNP, ORIGEN and SCALE;

+ Proficiency/experience in advanced risk assessment techniques including advanced probabilistic risk assessment;

+ Proficiency/experience in working with complex system modeling and large data set analyses and data analytics;

+ Proficiency/experience with thermal\-hydraulics codes such as TRACE and GOTHIC;

+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills\.



Department Description:



The Severe Accident Analysis Department \(8852\) has a specific focus on the modeling of severe accidents in nuclear power plants, developing computer codes to predict core melt down and radiological releases associated with such accidents\. We additionally model the atmospheric transport of radiological releases and predict their health and economic consequences\. These tools are used to perform risk studies and support probabilistic studies of severe accidents in nuclear power plants and other hazardous facilities\.

Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
