If so, MITREs Networking and Infrastructure Tech Center is currently looking for a Network Security Research Engineer to explore, test and innovate solutions to these and other challenging questions as we work to make our nation safer. The Key roles of a Network Security Research Engineer are:

  • Leverage penetration testing tools, red and blue, and create other techniques to conduct network vulnerability assessments against known and unknown security threats.

  • Provide Research support to a variety of sponsor and research based projects including design, development, integration and implementation activities in support of network systems and security.

  • Use innovative methods and tools to identify and solve complex network security problems in areas spanning IT networks, data centers, critical infrastructure, network operations and more.

  • Identify and develop innovative means of communication using new and emerging technologies to meet specific sponsor use cases.

  • Interact with MITRE and sponsor teams to present technical solutions and make recommendations on the preferred way to secure environments.


As an engineer in the Networking and Infrastructure Technology Center, you might expect to:

  • Develop prototypes that demonstrate novel solutions to sponsor problems.

  • Conduct hands-on lab analysis to solve technical issues, consider potential integration opportunities and understand performance/scalability issues.

  • Work closely with industry and communities to understand best practices and maintain a pulse of innovations in the networking Research area.

  • Perform hands-on assessments of network security devices to determine effectiveness against existing offensive capabilities.

  • Develop written products and technical reports that highlight findings and recommendations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors Degree in one of the following disciplines, Electrical, Computer or Systems Engineering and 3 years related experience. The candidate will demonstrate advanced principles, theories, concepts comparable to those obtained with a master's degree in the fields listed below. The candidate demonstrates sponsors'/customers' missions, domains, challenges. Fully responsible for deliverablesincluding definition, completion, and technical quality, as well as assuring consistency across the responsibility span.

Required Skills:

  • A passion to learn and work on challenging problems

  • Strong interest in networks, network security and related topics

  • Deep understanding of network layers 2, 3 and 4, including protocols and standards

  • Familiarity with layers 5-7 and their interaction with lower layers

  • Experience with Python, Ruby, C/C++, Java

  • Experience in conducting vulnerability assessments against networks, systems or applications

  • Knowledge regarding firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems and full packet capture

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills


Desired Skills:

  • Experience with Internet of Things, Industrial Controls Systems, or embedded networking protocols

  • Experience in Capture-The-Flag events, Red/Blue team competitions, or Hackathons
