Pratt & Whitney’s Hot Section Engineering organization (HSE) is currently seeking talented and dedicated composites engineers with creativity, drive, and a desire to see their ideas become a reality. ­The individuals will be part of a growing team responsible for the design and development of advanced high temperature ceramic composite hardware to meet the ever increasing performance demands of military and commercial aircraft jet engines. Structures leadership positions are available in Structural Analysis


Job Responsibilities
The individual will work as part of an Integrated Product Team to create and implement designs that meet engine-specific requirements. Individual will integrate and direct the structural analysis for multiple CMC programs and lead a small team of engineers. Qualified candidates must possess good communication and problem solving skills. The skill to build and evaluate detailed component level models is required. Key elements of this position include the capability to interpret analysis results for accuracy and propose alternate configurations to resolve design challenges. To ensure a robust design, the candidate will be responsible for continuous improvement of internal processes.


Responsibilities include:

  • Technical leadership through various phases of product design evolution.
  • Ensure robust technology maturation through proactive risk management.
  • Utilize continuous improvement tools in everyday work to meet product requirements.
  • Integration and balancing of requirements of supporting disciplines (aero, performance, structures, durability/heat transfer, manufacturing, assembly, etc.).
  • Own the design configuration, lead trade studies.


    Specific tasks may include:

  • Determination of laminate architecture, design of sub-element components for manufacturability and structural testing, and implementation of a gated design process leading to component validation engine testing; ­manufacturing process development assistance internally as well as at suppliers and integration of design for manufacturability / design for cost philosophies.
  • Finite element modeling and analysis; calculation of ply stresses, natural frequencies, transient dynamic response, impact capability, recession rates, fatigue life, and safety margins; monitoring of structural and engine tests; analysis of test results.
  • Technical oversight and guidance to less experienced engineers within the group.


Qualification:

Education:

A qualified candidate must have one of the following:­[1]­a Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or other applied engineering from a respected graduate program and relevant research experience, [2]­a M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or other applied engineering from a respected graduate program plus a minimum of two (2) years of experience in industry or [3]­B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or other applied engineering undergraduate curriculum plus a minimum of four (4) years of experience in industry.

Experience/Qualifications:

The candidate must be a U.S. citizen.

This position requires a high level of proficiency in finite element modeling and analysis of geometrically complex components and assemblies, which spans static and dynamic analysis.
A combination of skills and experience in the following areas is expected:

  • NX, FiberSIM, TeamCenter.
  • ANSYS, ANSYS ACP, NASTRAN, Abaqus, LS-DYNA.
  • Hypermesh, PATRAN, ProStar.
  • Mechanical properties testing, structural testing.
  • Non-destructive testing methods for composites.
  • Knowledge of advanced textile design and manufacturing methods
