Academic Graduate Appointee - Distribution Grid

We have an opening for an Academic Graduate Appointee to work under the guidance of Cyber and Infrastructure Resilience (CIR) program staff members to conduct basic and applied research in distribution system analysis and controls to support distributed energy resources (DER) integration into the grid. The successful candidate will support LLNL's Cyber and Infrastructure Resilience (CIR) program growing research portfolio in electric grid infrastructure. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED) within the Engineering Directorate.

In this role you will

  • Contribute to the research in distribution grid analysis and controls which creates and implements new state-of-the-art algorithms and hands-on experimentation on the topics of integration of distributed energy resources into the grid and microgrid implementation.
  • Contribute to the fulfillment of research projects and organizational objectives functioning as an effective team member on multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Collaborate with other Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) scientists and engineers to bring research results to practical use in LLNL Global Security programs.
  • Engage other scientists frequently to share relevant knowledge, opinions, and recommendations, working to fulfill deliverables as a team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience with grid simulation tools and languages such as Python and Matlab.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: distribution grid modeling and simulation, testing and experimentation, DER integration, and microgrid technology.
  • Ability to use standard programming languages to support modeling analysis and visualization for distributed grid.
  • Effective interpersonal skills necessary to interact with all levels of personnel and ability to work independently in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills to prepare, present, and document technical information.

Qualifications We Desire

  • MS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge.
  • Experience working with vendors and utilities, and relevant state and federal government agencies.
