We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct innovative research in the field of Advanced Metallurgy. You will develop, design, and evaluate a number of structural and functional alloys suitable for metal additive manufacturing and extreme environments and will be expected to make contributions in one or more of the following areas: direct LLNL programmatic areas, Laboratory Directed Research and Development projects, and other externally funded materials related activities.This position is in the Metallurgy and Advanced Microscopy Group of the Materials Science Division.

Essential Duties
- Design and execute bulk synthesis routes to enable and produce high-quality complex metals and alloys for applied science experiments.
- Develop advanced manufacturing approaches for new metals and alloys suitable for extreme conditions.
- Perform mechanical and thermo-physical measurements.
- Perform electron and optical microscopy to characterize samples.
- Work both independently and collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Document and publish research results in external peer-reviewed scientific journals and participate in domestic and international conferences.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications
- PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Condensed Matter Physics, or related field.
- Knowledgeable of standard mechanical testing methods.
- Experience testing and evaluating metals at high temperature.
- Experience in SEM, TEM, and related electron- and optical-microscopy methods.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effectivepresentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Experience performing self-directed research, presenting talks at conferences and a record of publishing results in established scientific journals.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with a broad spectrum of materials synthesis and characterization concepts and techniques: synchrotron x-ray techniques, x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy.
- Experience with metal rapid solidification.
- Experience with metal additive manufacturing techniques.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.For additional information, please see DOE Order 472.2.

Note: This is a two year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
