Job Description

GTRIs Signals and Systems Division (SASD) in the Advanced Concepts Laboratory seeks qualified candidates for the position of Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineer. This position involves applying advanced aerospace concepts to challenging real-world problems related to national defense. SASD engages in research in advanced threat analysis, operational employment concepts, advanced EM spectrum management, test and evaluation, and knowledge management primarily through the application of modeling and simulation.

SASD research scientists work on a variety of tasks, varying from project to project and depending on the individual's skills and interests.

This person will serve as both a contributor and a technical lead on projects, often coordinating with more specialized engineering disciplines and operational considerations. The person in this role will apply aerospace and aeronautical concepts to the study of advanced defense systems and systems of systems. This person will collaborate extensively with operational and technical subject matter experts. The role will involve eliciting inputs models of aerospace systems or engagements featuring aerospace systems, constructing the models, and validating the models. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about learning the context of the problems that they will be modeling and engaged in sharing their knowledge with the subject matter experts to support meaningful data elicitation and validation of models.

Job Duties:
The person in this role will be leading and performing work related to the following:

  • Analysis of alternatives
  • Systems of systems interactions evaluation
  • Aerospace systems performance evaluation
  • Trade space exploration
  • Evaluation of test results
  • System performance prediction

The person in this role will have to develop and validate models, lead and contribute to technical projects, develop and give technical presentations, write reports, review work of others and provide technical feedback and recommendations for enhancement, manage tasks and sometimes projects, mentor junior people or senior people needing aerospace knowledge, be mentored by people with key domain knowledge, and contribute to the transformation of the organization as we embrace digital engineering paradigms.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related discipline.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related discipline and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related discipline and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related discipline.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in aerospace or aeronautical engineering (internships are considered)
  • Excellent technical skills, including data analysis, numerical modeling, and analysis of complex problems, and aerospace systems analysis
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, are critical as work often informs thinking at the top-levels of the military and intelligence communities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Top Secret/SCI Clearance
  • MS or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Air vehicle design knowledge or experience
  • Parametric design knowledge or experience
  • Aircraft performance analysis knowledge or experience
  • Missile performance analysis knowledge or experience
  • Mission performance analysis knowledge or experience
  • Hypersonics knowledge or experience
  • Aerodynamics knowledge or experience
  • Flight dynamics knowledge or experience
  • Air vehicle stability and controls knowledge or experience
  • Propulsion knowledge or experience
  • Trajectory modeling knowledge or experience
  • Constructive simulation knowledge or experience
  • Systems engineering knowledge or experience
  • Experience with software, hardware, or firmware engineering and design
  • Technical leadership experience
  • Business development (including proposal writing) experience
  • Experience with operations research techniques (including optimization), formal design of experiments methodologies, and machine learning techniques/artificial intelligence
  • Experience with one or more of the following programming languages: C++, Matlab, Python, Fortran
  • Experience with Linux
  • Experience using configuration control processes and software
  • Experience using enterprise engineering/model-based systems engineering tools such as Cameo System Modeler or Enterprise Architect
  • Experience working with defense systems and defense systems of systems
  • Experience with military or intelligence operations
  • Experience or expertise in one or more of the following domain areas: (1) EO/IR or radar for air and ground-based applications, (2) electronic warfare techniques, (3) current and future kill chains, and (4) intelligence gathering and analysis.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
