Application Engineer - Protection

As an SEL Application Engineer, you will be the product expert! Your expertise will be utilized training and teaching our customers how our products are applied in utility and industrial applications. We are looking for an experienced Application Engineer to be a leader in protection in our Southeast Region.

Focus Area = Protection

Protection = system protection, protective relays and their applications, settings, and testing

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring for AEs in power systems, protection, and all related SEL products.
  • Help customers apply SEL products through visits, demonstrations, training courses and telephone contact.
  • Develops solutions to complex problems requiring the regular use of creativity, ingenuity, and experience. Independently supports customers for all knowledge areas of their specialization field and can navigate through questions outside of specialization.
  • Contributes to new product specifications and enhancements to products.
  • Participates and presents at SEL marketing and sales activities, industry technical meetings, and conferences.
  • Develop coursework and teach SEL University courses.
  • Regular contributor to internal white papers, application guides, notes, template guides, software tools, industry journals, SELU course material, and/or technical papers. Regularly sought after to review publications authored by others.
  • Mentor and trainer of engineers within team or region. May lead others. Regularly sought after for guidance, support, and example. Reviews other's work. Organizes and directs conference and seminar activities.
  • Sought-after contributor for internal product and process improvement ideas, discussions, and solutions.
  • Model and teach SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World-Class Manufacturing principles.
  • Understand. Create. Simplify.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have a Professional Engineer license and/or Senior IEEE membership for US/CAN region. Alternative is to have broad recognition by other senior engineers at SEL, AND demonstrated participation and leadership in industry meetings and technical societies.
  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent engineering degree)
  • Typically 10+ years of experience in power systems, industry practices, and protection.
  • Recognized as an expert instructor and provider of technical support by customers. Frequently consulted for support by internal peers.
  • Recognized as well-respected with proven technical leadership skills
  • Able to apply extensive experience and analysis as a generalist and a specialist and define general approaches and specific solutions to technical problems.
  • Ability to write and speak English coherently
