Assistant or Associate Professor – 2D Materials


The National Science Foundation (NSF) 2-Dimensional materials for Biofilm Science and Engineering (2D-BEST) Center at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology (SD Mines) seeks exceptional candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. In 2019, the State of South Dakota was awarded an NSF EPSCoR RII Track 1 grant, having a research focus at the intersection of 2D materials, biofilms, and big-data, resulting in the creation of the 2D BEST center The Center’s vision is to be nationally recognized for developing next-generation, nanoscale, conformal, two-dimensional (2D) coatings to control biofilm formation on technologically-relevant materials (e.g., metals, polymers, ceramics, soil particles, biological tissues) with agricultural, industrial, medical, and commercial applications. Biofilms play a critical role in food production (nitrogen fixation) and in the integrity of oil, gas, and water distribution systems (biocorrosion), impacting the grand challenges of food, energy, and water. Accordingly, 2D BEST researchers conduct convergent science to study gene expression and signaling pathways in response to changes in atomic-scale surface features. The opportunity to collaborate with faculties exists at all participating South Dakota institutions of higher learning.


Preference will be given to candidates with experience and research interests in 2D materials design, synthesis, defect engineering, and characterization for development of a suite of rationally designed 2D coatings on a range of technologically relevant materials. Synthesis includes thin film atomistic depositions techniques, such as chemical and physical vapor deposition. Defect engineering entails strategies for the intentional introduction of well-characterized defects in 2D coatings for subsequent investigation on their roles in biofilm phenotypes and genotypes. Successful candidates are expected to have potential for publication and will be expected to to initiate and/or sustain a nationally recognized, externally sponsored research program in the area of 2D materials and to develop courses related to 2D materials. Previous post-doctoral experience, a track record of funding, successful teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels, industrial experience, and demonstration of multi-disciplinary collaboration are preferred.


Candidates will have an earned doctorate in chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, materials science and engineering, nanoscience or nanoengineering, or a closely related discipline by the start date. The successful applicant will be assigned within an academic department on campus as their tenure/tenure-track home. Potential departments include Chemical and Biological Engineering; Chemistry, Biology, and Health Sciences; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Materials and Metallurgical Engineering; and Nanoscience and Nanoengineering. The new faculty member will have the opportunity to participate and to collaborate with faculties in M.S. and Ph.D. programs within Chemical and Biological Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering and Science, Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, and others on campus.
