Job Description

MREAB is predominantly focused on the research, education, and application of model-based systems engineering methods and processes. The Associate Branch Head assists the Branch Head in providing management and technical oversight for sponsored research, supervising the activities of 6-10 full-time research faculty and approximately 4 students. Additionally, the Associate Branch Head is responsible for coordinating with Division leadership on operational activities which include providing monthly performance status reports, staff planning and assignments, oversight of sponsored research projects, and business development activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

• Training and mentoring branch members including research faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, to develop expertise in systems engineering processes and software engineering including facilitating publication of novel research activities, professional development and training opportunities
• Assisting Branch Head with business development activities to include: sponsor engagement, showcasing branch capabilities to internal/external organizations, support sponsor tours, visits, and technical meetings/briefings
• Writing proposals and white papers for sustained branch growth
• Assisting Branch Head with administrative actions including Recruiting/Hiring/Terminating branch members, performance appraisals, performance improvement plans, review/approval of employee time sheets, purchase requests, and travel authorizations and expense reports
• Developing novel model-based approaches to supporting the Department of Defense (DoD) acquisition life cycle
• Applying MBSE tool suites to enable the use of model-based best practices in DoD acquisition and system life cycle support including the education of the use of said tool suites
• Supporting industry and DoD sponsors in the use and application of MBSE to tradespace analysis, design, and acquisition
• Executing model-based systems engineering processes including functional decomposition, requirements development, architectural development, and test program development

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

• A Master’s degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree; or
• A Master’s degree and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree; or
• A Doctoral degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

• A Master’s degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree; or
• A Doctoral degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related field and four (4) years of relevant full time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in a scientific or engineering field
• Candidates should have prior experience leading sponsored research projects and/or leading engineering teams
• Candidates should be able to demonstrate a strong background facilitating dialogue, collaboration, and partnerships among research personnel, government, and industry stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years experience with UML and/or SysML
• 4+ years’ experience in the field of Systems Engineering or a related Technical Field
• Current Research Engineer II/Research Scientist II or higher at GTRI

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
