Associate or Assistant Professor
Biomedical Engineering (Rehabilitation Engineering)

The UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) (www.bme.unc.edu) is seeking candidates for a faculty position (9-month, tenure-track) in Rehabilitation Engineering at the rank of Associate or Assistant Professor. Rehabilitation Engineering supports a variety of research, from basic animal and human studies of neuromechanics to translation of novel technology and techniques to the clinic, with the underlying goal of restoration of function in individuals with physical disabilities. Our interests include, but are not limited to biomechanics and modeling, prosthetics and orthotics, neural engineering, and human motor control and learning.

We encourage candidates conducting basic and applied research in the areas of: (1) innovative therapeutic or assistive technologies with the potential to transform rehabilitation practice from the clinic to the community, (2) human neuromechanics across multiple scales, (3) effects of sensation, perception, and cognition for human movement control, and (4) novel neural technologies and their clinical applications. Work with human subjects is anticipated. Outstanding candidates in other areas of Rehabilitation Engineering will also be considered. As this position will be within the core faculty of Biomedical Engineering, participation in both undergraduate and graduate instruction expected. The position will be filled at the Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on credentials and qualifications.

Founded in 2003, the UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is a unique collaboration between North Carolina’s two flagship universities: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) and North Carolina State University (NC State). The nationally-ranked UNC Hospitals and School of Medicine at UNC-CH provide an excellent clinical environment for interactions and translation, while the College of Engineering at NC State, one of the finest engineering and computer science schools in the world, offers state-of-the-art facilities for students and faculty engaged in vital areas of research and technology transfer.

In addition to the excellent resources of the Joint Department, the Closed-Loop Engineering for Advanced Rehabilitation (CLEAR) Core (clear.bme.unc.edu), Human Movement Science Program at UNC-CH (http://hmsc.unc.edu), the Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC) at UNC-CH, the NSF ERC ASSIST Center (https://assist.ncsu.edu/) at NC State, and the top-ranked NC State College of Veterinary Medicine provide excellent opportunities for Rehabilitation Engineering faculty to develop multidisciplinary and translational collaborations.

The selected candidate will have a primary appointment at NC State University, with tenure home in the College of Engineering.  Laboratory space will be allocated at NC State on Centennial Campus, where most of the engineering departments, including Biomedical Engineering, reside. The selected candidate will have full rights and privileges at both NC State and UNC-CH.

Women, members of minority groups, and people with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.
