We have an opening for an atmospheric scientist to work on atmospheric flow, transport and diffusion problems in the National Atmospheric Release Advisory Center (NARAC) (http://narac.llnl.gov), a national support and resource center for emergency response and analysis of hazardous atmospheric releases. You will be in the Atmospheric Flow, Transport and Hazard Assessment group within the Atmospheric, Earth and Energy Division (AEED).
This position will be filled at either theSES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties- Create atmospheric transport calculations quickly and accurately using the NARAC modeling suite and provide solutions to problems of moderate complexity.
- Implement Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) simulations for an operational center. - Provide consulting and regular, routine scientific support to and for users of NARAC.
- Generate customized real-time weather forecasts and hindcasts of historical meteorological conditions with the WRF model.- Serve on the team for monthly on-call rotation in the NARAC Operation Center.
- Develop and document standard operating procedures for the operations team.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Provide solutions to complex problems that require in-depth analysis and the creative use of established and/or innovative methods.
-Propose and conduct high-level briefings to executive management and government sponsors.
-Propose and execute major studies to substantiate programmatic goals.
Qualifications
- MS in meteorology, atmospheric science, environmental engineering or closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of synoptic and mesoscale meteorology and numerical weather prediction.
- Relevant experience compiling, configuring, and running a mesoscale meteorological model, such as WRF, and interpreting the results.
- Experience with available atmospheric reanalysis and observational data products.
- Familiarity with atmospheric processes, such as boundary layer turbulence, convection, and wet and dry deposition.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Ability to travel to coordinate research with collaborators.
In Additionat the SES.3 Level
- PhD in meteorology, atmospheric science, environmental engineering, or closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience in synoptic and mesoscale meteorology, numerical weather prediction, atmospheric reanalysis and observation data products.- Advanced knowledge and significant experience in compiling, configuring, and running a mesoscale meteorological model, such as WRF, and interpreting the results.

- Experience with weather model data assimilation methods and procedures using four-dimensional data assimilation, variational techniques, or state space estimation and knowledge of atmospheric transport modeling methods.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience generating probabilistic ensembles using numerical weather prediction simulations with varying model physics, initial conditions, and parameter settings.
- Experience with programming languages including Fortran, Python, Java and C++.
- Experience running community atmospheric dispersion models (e.g. HYSPLIT or FLEXPART).

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
