Job Description

The Georgia Tech Research Institute's Undersea System Program Office is looking for candidates with experience in robotic systems that are interested and capable of supporting, developing, and testing autonomy algorithms and autonomous systems. The successful candidate will balance their interests in development and experience in autonomy and autonomous systems with the needs of particular projects and research sponsors. Candidates will likely work on multiple projects simultaneously and coordinate efforts across a multi-disciplinary team to support cutting-edge autonomous system development for Department of Defense (DoD) sponsors.

Job Duties

  • Researching, understanding, and developing autonomy algorithms
  • Developing and modifying physics-based simulations for autonomy development and testing
  • Writing technical reports and systems documentation
  • Developing and delivering presentations to internal collaborators and external research sponsors
  • Integrating autonomous systems software into commercial and DoD unmanned systems
  • Conducting laboratory and field experiments for purposes of demonstrating autonomous system behaviors

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field of study.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field of study and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field of study and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Master's or Doctoral degree program relevant to this position will be considered. Candidate must have a graduation date of no later than August 2020
  • Must have at least 2 years of programming experience
  • Must have one or more years of experience with autonomy algorithms or testing autonomous systems
  • Experience with Linux environments, C++, Python, and typical development environments consisting of software repositories, problem tracking, and similar tools
  • Experience working with cross-disciplinary teams of software developers/engineers
  • Excellent communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates with M.S. or Ph.D. in STEM field
  • Experience with ROS, Matlab, Gazebo, Scrimmage, MOOS, or other autonomous systems development frameworks
  • Experience in distributed planning algorithms
  • Experience working with real-world robotics systems

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Ability to obtain Secret Clearance upon hire
