We are seeking a highly motivated System Engineer (Job ID: R&D S&E Systems Engineer) to join the B83 Stockpile Department! A B83 Systems Engineer will contribute to ongoing operations and ensuring readiness for emerging program requirements. We conduct annual assessment activities to assure that the systems continue to meet safety, security, and reliability requirements. Engineers will assist with day-to-day operations, trouble-shooting, and problem-solving with multidisciplinary teams across the Nuclear Security Enterprise; develop new assessment technology to deepen our understanding of safety, security and performance; and interact closely with the National Nuclear Security Administration and the Department of Defense to ensure that their needs are addressed. Opportunities are available to support the broader nuclear deterrence mission including expanding the nuclear incident response capability at the Sandia Livermore Site.

On any given day you may be called to:

+ Investigate/troubleshoot anomalies in cross-functional teams

+ Team with other design agencies to plan, execute and analyze data from advanced experiments

+ Analyze mechanical assemblies

+ Analyze system and subsystem architectures

+ Integrate and test subassemblies

+ Plan and execute testing for environment and performance qualification

+ Derive, reconcile, and track requirements

+ Present at technical design reviews and other forums

+ Represent Sandia on multi-organizational project teams

+ Oversee production agency engineering process development and qualification

+ Triage and provide timely recommendations for emerging issues, including emergency response

+ Develop and maintain required administrative documentation

+ Full system field test and engineering

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.

Qualifications We Require:

+ Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or related field plus 5 years of related experience; or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or in a related field plus 1 year of experience, or combination of education and equivalent engineering or scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to independently perform the engineering responsibilities of the system.

+ An active Department of Energy Q level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

+ Proven experience working with DOE, NNSA, DOD, or Federally Funded Research and Development Centers

+ Systems engineering experience

+ Field Engineering experience

+ Project management experience

+ Nuclear Incident Response experience

+ Engineering skills, such as: computer aided design, configuration managed product definition, preparation of regulatory documentation, structural dynamics, vibration characterization, structural analysis, heat transfer analysis, laboratory measurement techniques and diagnostics, computational simulation and modeling, integration of subsystems, fabrication of prototypes, design qualification testing, production qualification, production oversight.

The California Stockpile Systems Group has stockpile stewardship responsibility for legacy stockpile systems. Positions provide a Systems Engineering experience in a multidisciplinary working environment with engaging technical work for engineers of all specialties and levels. Through a robust program of scientific inquiry, a multidisciplinary engineering team is responsible for leading sustainment and assessment activities to ensure the safety and reliability of the stockpile. Stockpile Systems strives yearly to increase the quality and depth of its technical basis used to evaluate the system’s state of health, which culminates in an Annual Assessment Report sent to the President of the United States.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
