LLNLs Biosciences and Biotechnology Division (BBTD) has an opening for a Biomedical Scientist with experience in Molecular Biology, Genomics, Biochemistry, and/or Microbiology. You will work in a team environment to design and conduct scientific research with a focus on new sequencing technologies and molecular approaches to apply genomic technologies to advance the research interests of the BioForensics group.The position is in the Biosecurity and Bioforensics group of the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division and matrixed to the Biosecurity Center within the Global Security Principal Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level, depending on your qualifications. Additional job duties will be assigned at the higher level.

- Apply molecular biology methods to study samples of moderate complexity (microbial, environmental, etc.) for analysis using protein and nucleic acid preparation techniques.
-Perform molecular biology techniques including PCR (polymerase chain reaction), reverse transcription PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR, DNA Cloning, CRISPR, etc.
-Perform electrophoresis, blotting, and hybridization on nucleic acid and protein samples.
-Perform sequencing techniques (e.g. Sanger, NGS, etc.)
-Perform nucleic acid precipitations, purifications, and quantification using a variety of established and innovative techniques.
-Document experimental results, capture digital images, and maintain a detailed, accurate laboratory notebook and tracking spreadsheets, communicate results to relevant team members.
- Contribute to basic lab maintenance (restocking, waste removal, organization, ordering supplies, etc).
-Perform other duties as assigned.
- Prepare Next generation sequencing libraries (target enrichment, WGS, 16S, etc.) and perform high throughput sequencing on variety of platforms (Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, etc.).
- Provide solutions to complex problems that require creative use of established and/or innovative methods.
- Test new or modified protocols/chemistries for nucleic acid extraction, library preparation, and sequencing applications.

- B.S. Degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genomics, Microbiology, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Previous experience with molecular biology techniques including PCR, qPCR, nucleic acid extractions, low-input sequencing library preparation, high throughput sequencing.
- Competency in the use of UNIX, Mac, PC platforms and ability to learn custom software applications.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to troubleshoot experimental processes and provide analysis.
- Previous experience with laboratory automation.
- Strong organizational and record keeping skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills for working in a team environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Advanced knowledge of molecular biology techniques and NGS methodologies.
- Ability to carry out experiments in Biological Safety Level 2 laboratory.
- Experience troubleshooting new experimental processes and optimize Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

Security Clearance: This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire.
