CAD Technologist (Experienced)

We are seeking a highly motivated Computer Aided Design and Drafting Technologist

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Create and modify three-dimensional models and detailed drawings using sketches, layouts, or notes provided by engineering.
+ Design components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations.
+ Gather information, conduct studies, perform calculations, and prepare original rough layouts and sketches to present proposed designs; may consult with engineers to discuss and interpret design concepts and determine requirements of detailed working drawings. Uses Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure fit form and function.
+ Utilize three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) software to perform mass property calculations and tolerance and interference analyses.
+ Partners with engineers to discuss and interpret design concepts and determine requirements of detailed product definition drawings
+ Lead design teams and mentor staff with less experience

You may be interviewed and/or hired into one of several organizations at Sandia National Labs


+ Associate's degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent experience
+ Ten years of relevant experience
+ Experience using solid modeling application software


+ Understanding of fundamental design principles that apply to product design and manufacturing.
+ Experience using Pro/ENGINEER solid modeling application software.
+ Understanding the fundamentals of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing.
+ Demonstrated excellent organizational skills.
+ Excellent interpersonal skills.
+ Proven record of demonstrating initiative and getting results.
+ Demonstrated communication skills, both oral and written.
+ Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products

Department Description:

Sandia National Laboratories Design Engineering Group consists of several mechanical design departments who provides design engineering services using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, such as Pro/Engineer and other 3D modeling tools, to mathematically represent the physical attributes of the product. We partner with Product Realizations Teams (PRTs) to produce high quality design models and engineering drawings of systems, components and layouts including assembly and piece part definition using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). We determine the physical characteristics of the product to be manufactured, including geometric form, interface features, manufacturing specifications, processes, and assembly instructions. We ensure design feasibility from a manufacturing and product maintenance perspective. We communicate the design options and recommended approach to product development teams, stakeholders, and manufacturing partners. We apply technical judgment based upon engineering principles in the design and development of innovative products for supporting our Nations security programs. Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance.
