Job Description

ASL is seeking a candidate to serve as the Chief of the Aviation Systems Division (ASD) in Huntsville, AL. The successful candidate will lead a focused technical team of research faculty and staff on aviation related technologies applied to multiple airborne platforms. Prior technical management experience working with and directing the efforts of technical teams in a direct managerial lead role is required.

Job Duties:
The Chief-ASD is a leadership position within the Applied Systems Laboratory. Duties of the Chief-ASD include:

  • Identifying and expanding sponsored research associated with ASD’s primary sponsor, the US Army Program Executive Office (PEO) Aviation and its subordinate Program Offices.
  • Manage personnel and budgets assigned to the ASD. Perform management tasks such as recruiting, onboarding, personnel development and mentoring and evaluating and documenting researcher and supervisor (Branch Head) performance.
  • Ensure sponsored programs and projects within the ASD are executed on time and within budget and conduct best business practices for program management.
  • Work across the Lab, GTRI and GT to ensure ASD sponsored projects are staffed appropriately and integrated as needed with other related programs across GTRI and GT.
  • Lead the development of highly technical and innovative solutions to meet sponsor needs.
  • Develop and execute the ASD strategic strategy in association with the Lab, GTRI and GT strategic plans.

Travel Requirements

10% - 25% travel

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a related field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a related field and four (4) years of relevant full time experience.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a related field and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in engineering and/or applicable field of science with a minimum of 15 years of experience since the BS.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Aviation related work
  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing technical teams
  • Working knowledge of aviation interfaces (e.g. MIL-STD-1553) and open system architecture standards (e.g. FACE)

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
