Job Description

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) seeks a visionary researcher for the role of Chief Scientist in its Trusted Microelectronics Program Office (TMPO). TMPO researches microelectronic applications, tools, architectures, and materials to evaluate the security, trust, and reliability of microelectronic devices and the critical systems which rely upon them. TMPO develops tools and techniques in the areas of assurance, anti-tamper, and reliability for FPGAs, ASICs, SoCs, microcontrollers, and other microelectronics. TMPO's 20+ employees are research faculty of Georgia Tech and have the optional opportunity for dual appointments and teaching positions with other departments of the university. TMPO is a division of GTRI's cybersecurity unit (CIPHER Lab) which contains 300+ engineers and scientists and represents over 10% of Georgia Tech's total research awards.

The TMPO Chief Scientist will be principally responsible for the division's strategic technical capabilities development. The candidate will coordinate and develop an internal research (IRAD) portfolio which positions the group for future sponsored research activities within the division's mission statement. The candidate will work with division leadership and all employees to generate IRAD ideas and proposals for each fiscal year. The IRAD portfolio and should reflect a candidate's successful ability to track and predict sponsor interests and technology trends. The candidate is expected to grow collaborations with other university, government, and industry partners to expand the division's overall research capabilities. The candidate is also expected to lead proposal efforts, provide project leadership, and be a technical contributor.

Job Duties:

  • Work with TMPO leadership to plan for division capabilities growth and positioning through development and management of an internal research portfolio
  • Seek out new funding opportunities and lead research proposal efforts
  • Seek out new collaborators to foster joint research, e.g., manage relationships with research groups at various universities and companies
  • Serve as PD/PI for research projects
  • Demonstrate technical leadership through ongoing software and/or hardware development contributions to sponsored projects

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Science and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Science and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Science.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Science and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Science nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Science and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency in a research environment related to microelectronics or security, e.g., writing proposals, leading projects, leading technical teams
  • Experience with at least one major FPGA vendor design tool suite, e.g., Xilinx Vivado, Intel (Altera) Quartus, Microsemi Libero
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD security clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field of study
  • Proven experience developing and managing research portfolios
  • Experience in TMPO related research areas, e.g., custom software/CAD development, digital design, formal methods
  • Experience in advanced government research

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
