The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) seeks a highly accomplished researcher and nationally recognized visionary leader to serve as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The CTO reports directly to the Director of GTRI, participates on the GTRI Executive Council as a member of the GTRI executive leadership team. The CTO has the overall responsibility to lead the planning and management of GTRI’s Internal Research and Development (IRAD) portfolio; lead technology innovation; and lead GTRI collaborations with academic units of Georgia Tech (GT). The CTO is also expected to actively perform research in his or her domain of expertise. GTRI has a staff of over 2400 scientists, engineers, and support personnel who are organized within three research directorates: Electronics, Optics & Systems Directorate; Information & Cyber Sciences Directorate; and Sensors & Intelligent Systems Directorate; and a number of business operations directorates. The three research directorates oversee eight research laboratories: Applied Systems Lab; Electronic Systems Lab; Electro-Optical Systems Lab; Cybersecurity, Information Protection, Hardware Evaluation Research Lab; Information & Communications Lab; Advanced Concepts Lab; Aerospace, Transportation & Advanced Systems Lab; and Sensors & Electromagnetic Applications Lab. The CTO coordinates closely with the directors of the three research directorates and the leadership of the eight research labs in performing his/her duties.

Job Duties:
Major responsibilities in leading IRAD include:

  • Lead the collaborative development, formulation, and selection of GTRI IRAD Strategic Initiatives with Lab Chief Scientists
  • Oversee the GTRI IRAD budget of approximately $12M/year, consisting of a diverse array of projects in topics and scope; identify and champion for IRAD portfolio improvements
  • Collaborate with GTRI Finance to ensure regulatory compliance of the entire IRAD portfolio
  • Orchestrate GTRI’s annual IRAD Extravaganza, an event designed to raise awareness of the IRAD portfolio and foster collaboration across GTRI Labs and units
  • Coordinate vetting of GTRI Fellows, GTRI research awards, and IRAD of the year award
  • Participate and represent GTRI IRAD portfolio in engagements with high-level external visitors, vet materials that represent GTRI
  • IRAD work for both external and internal presentations

Major responsibilities in leading technology innovation include:

  • Setting technology innovation goals consistent with GTRI strategy and informed by emergent opportunities
  • Inform GTRI senior leadership of technology trends and their potential impacts on a regular basis
  • Maintain an extensive network with leading researchers, research groups in academia, national labs, and industry, both nationally and internationally
  • Maintain current knowledge of emerging science and technology opportunities and emerging national security needs
  • Maintain close linkage with Federal government science and technology sponsors

Major responsibilities in leading GTRI collaborations with GT academic units include:

  • Lead the GTRI’s collaborations with GT academic units and interdisciplinary research centers by developing mechanisms and constructs to facilitate the collaborative efforts
  • Serve as the primary interface to the Georgia Tech Vice President for Interdisciplinary Research
  • Serve as the primary point of contact to facilitate connecting GTRI researchers with GT researchers

Major responsibilities in performing research include:

  • Develop research proposals for funding in own research area
  • Carry out research activities of sponsored projects
  • Manage sponsored research projects



25% - 50% travel


  • Ph.D. degree in a science or engineering field and 10+ years of experience in leading development of research programs relevant to GTRI’s core competencies
  • Significant and demonstrated recent performance in successful development of novel concepts that led to new technologies for national security applications
  • Significant and demonstrated recent experience in leading complex research projects
  • Demonstrated technical achievements in own research
  • Current knowledge of national security needs
