Job Description

The Secure Information Systems Division (SIS) in the Cybersecurity, Information Protection, and Hardware Evaluation Research Laboratory (CIPHER) is looking to hire a Cloud Engineer for projects centered around application virtualization in a security sensitive environment. This is a technical role with unique challenges. A successful candidate should enjoy solving technical problems. Flexibility towards different management tools and system architectures is a prerequisite for success in this role, as the projects are iterative in nature and will change over time.

Successful candidates need to be self-starting and have the ability to design solutions and resolve issues with modest levels of support. Candidates must enjoy working with open source software and cutting edge technologies. Candidates will contribute to sponsored research projects and have an opportunity to work with scientists and engineers.

Job Duties

  • Developing and recommending security designs and frameworks for technology systems by defining process and architecture for creating and accrediting secure information systems
  • Defining information security controls and patterns that support risk assessments and support the development of secure architectures
  • Assess, recommend, develop, and implement Amazon Web Service infrastructure
  • Assess, recommend, develop, and implement Citrix infrastructure
  • Automate creation of cloud infrastructure and core services via Ansible
  • Develop PowerShell scripts from scratch to build windows environments on cloud architecture
  • Assess, Document, Engineer, and implement security standards in accordance with NIST SP 800-53
  • Provide engineering level of effort design and implementation trade-off criteria for cloud, VDI, and core service infrastructure based upon NIST SP 800-53 security controls
  • Contribute to developing DevSecOps road map and building a CI/CD pipeline
  • Develop and implement core service infrastructure for network management and security for AWS using external commercial off the shelf tools such as Splunk and Science Logic

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering and four (4) years of relevant full time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Server OS - Experience with at least one of: MS Server, Linux (RHEL/CentOS/Debian), HP-UX
  • Recent experience standing up/building AWS or Azure infrastructure
  • Experience leveraging Ansible to automate builds
  • Experience deploying Citrix infrastructure/Netscalers
  • Writing scripts in PowerShell. (Experience must go beyond editing existing scripts and using templates)
  • Experience with IaaS, PaaS, and Cloud Services such as AWS or Azure
  • Understanding of secure networks (i.e. Cisco (IOS), DNS, DHCP, BIND, CIFS, NFS, FC, iSCSI) and application design

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to integrate security tools with IT infrastructure
  • Ability to lead security architecture and engineering activities in a matrixed organization
  • Experience identifying and recommending mitigation steps for threats and risks associated with security vulnerabilities in a POA&M
  • Experience in developing in multiple distributed environments
  • Outstanding writing skills with an ability to convey complex, technical information in an engaging and easily understood manner
  • Experience with Version Control Systems (Git, Bitbucket)
  • Experience with Desired State Configuration, VBScript, Perl, .Net C#, Python
  • Certifications: Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Red Hat Engineering
  • Active TS/SCI Security Clearance

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
