We have multiple openings for a Machine Tool Programmer in the Special Materials Machining Facility. You will work independently to provide highly advanced programming and manufacturing support to fabricate complex research hardware/apparatus to customer requirements. These positions require close technical interactions with engineering support personnel and the ability to work closely on a continuing basis as part of a small team. These roles will report to the Special Materials Machining Facility (SMMF) supervisor. These positions are in the Materials Engineering Division (MED).

Essential Duties
- Provide manufacturing process and programming expertise for SMMF and various manufacturing work centers as needed.
- Perform shop calculations utilizing knowledge of material characteristics to determine optimum feeds, speeds, and depth of cuts.
- Post processor development and support for multi-axis machine tools.
- Provide elevated level of technical input for machine-tool procurements, retrofits and support equipment.
- Attend and participate in design reviews and planning meetings.
- Perform shop math calculations utilizing knowledge of material characteristics to achieve ultra-precision finishes, dimensions, and overall design intent.
- Design complex fixtures and jigs to be used during a variety of manufacturing processes.
- Establish and plan techniques and procedures to carry out complex technical assignments and set task priorities.
- Solve complex technical problems.

- Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering technology, or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
- Significant experience with CAD and CAM programs.
- Strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Substantial experience in G-Code Programming.
- Experience working independently and collaboratively as part of a team with effective organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

Desired Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree in Manufacturing, Machine Tool Technology, Computer Numerical Control or CAD/CAM.
- CAD experience specifically with Pro-E and/or Solidworks.
- CAM experience specifically with Mastercam.
- Experience with C or C+ programming language.
- Extensive experience in G-code programming on Fanuc, Heidenhain, Siemens, Mazak and/or Okuma controllers, or equivalent.
- Experience writing scripts in Matlab.
- Active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or an active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency.
- Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on developing relationships and building long-term collaborations with internal and/or external sponsors.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
