Computational Scientist Postdoctoral Researcher

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to perform advanced research and development on the modeling of laser plasma interaction and control. This project will investigate the ability of machine learning models to predict the plasma response to spike trains of uneven duration and delay (STUD) pulses. You will work with theoretical and experimental plasma physicists, computational mathematicians, and data scientists, including collaborators external to the Laboratory. This position is in the Computing Directorate within the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division.

In this role you will:

  • Conduct research and develop data-driven methods based on simulation data from models of varying fidelity.
  • Develop simulation models and execute novel computational studies of plasma responses to STUD pulses.
  • Investigate the interpretability and generalization properties of different classes of machine learning models.
  • Collaborate and interact with multi-disciplinary research teams.
  • Publish research results in external peer-reviewed scientific journals and participate in scientific conferences.
  • Conduct independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to define and carry out the research.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computational science, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of numerical mathematics and machine learning techniques.
  • Experience programming in C++, Python and/or Julia.
  • Experience applying machine learning techniques to data from physical systems; working knowledge of PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Ability to perform independent research.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a multidisciplinary team, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver technical presentations.

Position Information

This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
