The Computer Application Specialist works independently and/or with a team on project-oriented tasks, providing advanced computer systems support to pharmacy management and staff.  Activities include but are not limited to: operating and maintaining computer software and equipment, operational support to department staff, pharmacy system backups, generating and delivering computer reports, resolving computer related problems, and providing on-call support.  Ensures production and completion of schedules for nightly job processing to ensure maximum system availability. Provides management with customized reports and audit information; works with HM IT to ensure system operations are coordinated and within corporate wide IT guidelines. Writes and documents all HTML code, Java, JavaScript, VBScript, Active Server Pages, and all other web content and applications.

2. Works with HM Hospital IT to ensure system operations are coordinated and within corporate wide Hospital IT guidelines. (EF) 

1. Supports and installs software applications.  Provides on call support and responds to incoming communications promptly. (EF)
2. Provides departmental management with customized reports and audit information, as requested.  Produces, reviews, and distributes, daily, weekly, monthly, and on-demand system reports, as requested. (EF) 
3. Writes and documents all HTML code, Java, JavaScript, VBScript, Active Server Pages, and all other web content and applications as required. (EF)
4. Reviews and monitors daily operations schedule, performs job processing in a timely manner to maximize system availability, and ensures appropriate processing and system backups are captured. (EF)

1. Evaluates database structures and makes modifications as needed. Maintains files, profiles, and tables as required (e.g. procedures, data files, and others) using security standards and data integrity measures. (EF) 
2. Performs system maintenance such as: records of inventory, licenses, problems, upgrades, cleaning and service. Performs shutdowns and reboots, supporting the Unix AIX, Windows based server, Pyxis, Omnicell and Swisslog systems, as required. (EF)
3. Participates in departmental quality management activities that include but are not limited to: evaluation and testing of software, file maintenance, record keeping and reporting. (EF)

1. Uses resources efficiently; does not waste supplies. Recommends solutions in achieving departmental objectives. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks. (EF)

1. Designs, develops, implements, maintains, and supports internet/intranet web initiatives for Houston Methodist Pharmacy. (EF)

High School Diploma or equivalent; two years of college preferred

At least one year computer and network operations experience or comparable computer experience within the information technology field

Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills and competency assessments
Able to rotate through any shift; however, work hours are generally assigned on a scheduled basis; must be available for on-call duty
Exhibits strong analytical and logical skills, proficient knowledge of commonly used programming concepts, practices and procedures within the information Technology field, and demonstrated proficiency in computer systems and business processes
Ability to support applications on  multiple database and operating systems platforms including Windows Intel, Unix AIX, Oracle an SQL Server; strong client server/browser-based skills and strong scripting and/or configuration skills
Basic familiarity and understanding of the TCP/IP protocol and networking, and Intermediate experience with Crystal Reports, Oracle, SQL and SQL queries, and installing, configuring and maintaining windows-based desktop operating systems
Must demonstrate ability to lead medium to large scale projects
Exhibits strong interpersonal and team player skills with all levels of the healthcare team and assures delivery of excellent customer service to all patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers; must demonstrate ability to lead medium to large scale projects
Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
