Computer Science - Predictive Modeling and Simulation (Experienced)

Sandia has openings in reliable predictive modeling and simulation with applications to nuclear weapons, energy, cyber, climate and other national scale issues. Our R&D staff tackles challenging research problems that lead to fundamental advances in large-scale modeling and simulation for Sandia's customers and sponsors. Research areas include uncertainty quantification, machine learning, infrastructure resilience, domain decomposition, time parallelism, reduced order modeling, data analytics, a posteriori model refinement, numerical optimization, and high-performance computing with applications to large-scale models. Much of the work is conducted in interdisciplinary teams, including interactions with other departments within Sandia as well as external collaborators. Researchers will be encouraged to publish and present results in leading peer-reviewed journals and conferences as well as to develop algorithms and software.


+ Master's degree in computational engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or a related engineering or science discipline plus 1 or more years work experience in a related field;
+ Experience with software and computing platforms including some or all of the following: JAVA, Unix, C++, Git, high-performance computing;
+ Experience with uncertainty analysis, optimization technology, or other related computer modeling/simulation technologies for complex systems
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a Q-level security clearance


+ Expertise in computational science, and statistics;
+ Experience in use of machine learning/deep learning technologies;
+ Strong academic performance;
+ Demonstrated communication skills, both oral and written;
+ Demonstrated ability to team in an interdisciplinary R&D environment;
+ Demonstrated ability to acquire, prepare, and characterize real-world data for subsequent analysis;
+ Demonstrated research community leadership through activities such as participation in student or professional organizations, service on committees, workshop and/or conference organization, and editorial roles.

Department Description:

The Quantitative Modeling and Analysis Department conducts research, development, and systems engineering in computer science and engineering to address important, complex national security problems. Key research areas include uncertainty quantification, optimization, inference modeling, data analysis, and algorithm development. Much of our application development work focuses on verification, validation and uncertainty quantification of complex problems. We provide trusted design and software development for large, operations software as well as detailed scientific computing software. The work is focused on providing efficient, validated information and technologies for use in predictive modeling and decision making.
