Computer Science Technical Solutions Professional (Early/Mid-Career)

We are seeking a Computer Science Technical Solutions Professional who will take a broad systems perspective to develop model-based systems supporting strategies, priorities, and requirements for technology solutions. The successful applicant will:

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Lead technical projects and contribute effectively on research teams
+ Work with customers to understand needs and propose solutions
+ Conduct innovative research
+ Present results as appropriate to management, customers, at open conferences or classified meetings
+ Travel and meet with sponsors to support execution of programs


+ Bachelors degree in relevant technical discipline or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
+ Evidence of relevant research expertise in the form of technical publications, presentations, software, and/or knowledge of applications
+ Domain expertise in any or all of the following: Math modeling and/or data science and/or cyber-security
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted Q-level clearance


+ Computer Science expertise in one or more of the following: design and analysis of complex systems, decision analysis, risk analysis, international security and policy, expert elicitation, facilitation, communications with non-technical audiences, and operational or policy guidance development
+ Expertise in one or more of the following: risk management, vulnerability assessment, secure software and hardware design, system modeling and simulation, big data analytics or machine learning, mobile security, cloud computing, network modeling, and optimization/simulation
+ Software development experience and familiarity with relevant analysis and/or mod-sim tools
+ Evidence of professional service to the community, such as service on program committees, workshop organization, and/or editorial or review work
+ A proven ability to frame and tackle complex and/or ill-defined multidisciplinary problems
+ Background in solving practical problems in science and engineering that involve encounters with real-world data, especially large data sets
+ Software development competence in at least one programming language, and software engineering proficiency
+ Demonstrated ability to communicate well in informal (one-on-one) and formal (seminar) environments

Department Description:

The Math Analy & Decision Science Department, will support NW, DoD, DOE, and other government agency programs that involve systems analysis, system of systems, enterprise reliability, sustainment and operations as well as NW production and test activities. As the Group grows, additional sponsors and areas of work may also be added or shifted to enable the success of the Group. The department will combine advanced mod/sim technologies, software, and experience to develop and apply new and unique capabilities in wide-ranging areas that include operations research, logistics, technology management, lifecycle and total ownership cost analysis, and sensitivity, uncertainty, and risk analysis. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the research and development of new and differentiating capabilities as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a supportive technical environment, while maintaining a high degree of customer focus. The department will have projects of varying size and complexity, providing opportunities for experience, mentoring, and research.

The Complex Systems for National Security Group (8720) researches, designs, develops and applies underlying mathematical, computational science and systems engineering approaches to analyze, predict and influence the behavior of complex, highly interdependent systems critical to our nations security. This job will be to research, design, develop, and apply advanced computational capabilities to all Mission Portfolios motivated by the challenge of understanding, quantifying, and controlling the resilience of key complex systems critical to the laboratories National Security mission. The approaches and capabilities we provide are used to address complicated system and enterprise-level challenges facing a diverse set of national security partners. We also conduct work and advance capabilities in the areas of optimization, data science, artificial intelligence/machine learning/deep learning, complex systems modeling and analysis, and geospatial analytics.
