The New York City Campaign Finance Board seeks a Content Writer to craft compelling copy and contribute to multi-media storytelling across the agency’s communication platforms, with a focus on digital channels. The Content Writer’s work will deepen engagement, participation, and understanding of the agency’s programs, including its matching funds program for candidates running for local office and NYC Votes, its citywide voter engagement initiative. The position reports to the Content Strategy Manager and works closely with colleagues throughout the division, including team members in design and production as well as staff focused on partnerships and research. The Content Writer will play a critical role in helping the agency and the city of New York increase voter participation, with a particular focus on increasing turnout in youth and immigrant communities in the 2020 and 2021 elections.



  • Write copy and stories to engage visitors across the agency’s platforms, with a focus on digital channels including websites, blog posts, social media, email, and text message.
  • Brainstorm creative new approaches to presenting information that drives voters, volunteers, and partner organizations to take action.
  • Conduct research, gather information from stakeholders, and write original, accessible, and concise materials to explain and help readers navigate agency programs and topics related to voting, campaign finance, and other issues as assigned.
  • Create email and text message election alerts and other timely communications based on the agency’s editorial calendar, election dates, and other priorities and deadlines.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in social media, design, video, web, and production to support the creation of multimedia assets and campaigns, including advertising campaigns, videos, and webpages.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of NYC Votes’ audiences, brand voice, and style guide, and create content that is in line with our goals and guidelines.
  • Support review and approval process and integrate feedback and edits to ensure that final materials are accurate and complete.
  • Write content that is sensitive to a variety of considerations and needs and exemplifies best practices in inclusivity, accessibility, and SEO.
  • Translate technical, statistical information and complex government processes into clear and understandable language and messaging.
  • Assist with proofreading and editing of agency materials and reports, including selecting pull quotes, writing executive summaries, and highlighting key takeaways.

  • Adaptable to changing priorities and ability to quickly pivot to rapid response.
  • Ability to understand the perspectives of diverse audiences and create content that addresses their needs, barriers, and motivations.
  • Experience working with youth and immigrant communities, including facility with language(s) other than English, would be a significant asset.
  • Sharp eye for detail; ability to proofread and correct own work.
  • Strong multi-tasker with the ability to balance multiple simultaneous assignments and competing priorities and ask for help and guidance when needed.
  • Ability to work with subject matter experts to translate technical and statistical information into clear written language.


  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Significant experience writing original content for publication.
  • Experience creating content for digital platforms.
  • Background or interest in elections, politics, government, or community organizing.
  • Pursuant to Department of Citywide Administrative Services Directive No. 2020-2, New York City residency must be obtained within six months after the Mayor rescinds the State of Emergency under Executive Order 98 (and extended by subsequent Executive Orders). If that time period has passed, residency must be obtained within 90 days of starting the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years or more of full-time work experience as a copywriter, content creator, journalist, or other professional writer.
  • Expertise in email and/or text message campaigns and best practices.
  • Work experience in marketing/advertising, media, journalism, politics, government, advocacy, or a related field.

Salary range is $53,000 - $60,000.
