Job Description

GTRI's Advanced Warfighting Technologies Division in the Advanced Concepts Laboratory seeks qualified candidates for the position of Counterproliferation & Counter Weapons of Mass Destruction Capabilities Branch (CCB) Chief. The role of this position is to lead a team of researchers focused on the development of technologies and system-level capabilities in the areas of biological, chemical, radiological & nuclear protection, and defeat. The CCB Chief will be responsible for leading multiple sponsored research projects and managing branch (7-15 FTE) administrative activities including hiring, appraisals, and sponsored project success. 

Job Duties

  • Oversee and manage branch budgets, resources, and compliance with institute policies and procedures
  • Oversee and manage sponsored research in the branch to ensure execution of successful research programs based on sponsor requirements
  • Support branch operations and coordination across branches within the division and other laboratories of GTRI
  • Establish, maintain and evolve the strategic vision and execution plan for the branch to enhance sponsored project portfolios and technical capabilities
  • Train and mentor branch members including research faculty and both undergraduate and graduate students, to develop expertise in branch core competencies including facilitating the publication of novel research activities, professional development, and training opportunities
  • Direct business development activities to include: sponsor engagement, showcasing branch capabilities to internal and external organizations, support sponsor tours, visits, and technical meetings
  • Oversee, author, and contribute to proposals and white papers for sustained branch growth
  • Conduct administrative actions including the recruitment, hiring, and termination of branch personnel, execution of performance appraisals, development and execution of performance improvement plans, and review and approval of employee timesheets
  • Represent the division and laboratory as a subject matter expert at consortiums, symposiums, and expositions
  • Ensure that all technical work is performed and documented to organizational and DoD standards-based on project requirements
  • Perform other duties as assigned

The Advanced Warfighting Technologies Division provides technology development and tactical analysis for countering weapons of mass destruction, threat assessment and wargaming of ground-maneuver and asymmetric warfare, and rapid technology integration and prototyping for rapid reaction warfighting capabilities for the U.S. Government and other sponsors.

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in chemistry, biology, physics, nuclear engineering, or a related engineering/science field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in chemistry, biology, physics, nuclear engineering, or a related engineering/science field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in chemistry, biology, physics, nuclear engineering, or a related engineering/science field and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in chemistry, biology, physics, nuclear engineering, or a related engineering/science field and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree in chemistry, biology, physics, nuclear engineering, or a related engineering/science field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience working in the area of counterproliferation & counter weapons of mass destruction in the Department of Defense or a research organization that performs research/technical support to representative DoD/US Government programs
  • Experience leading projects and teams in areas such as cost, scope, schedule, and performance
  • Experience in leading research efforts, hardware/software integration, modeling and simulation tools, and rapid prototyping
  • Must possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Top Secret, SCI/SAP Clearance
  • Ph.D. preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Experience in proposal development
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Experience within the DoD, DOE/NNSA, or Intelligence Community

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
