Data Science Systems Researcher (Experienced)

We are seeking a Data Science Systems Researcher (R&D S&E, Systems Research and Analysis) to join our team.

Working within a creative and collaborative environment, you will address national security challenges through research and development in data science, geospatial science, computer science, complex systems, autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Brainstorm new approaches to difficult problems
+ Publish work results in a technical journal or conference
+ Analyze and integrate information from multiple sources, applying and combining innovative techniques
+ Discover and develop novel geospatial data algorithms and manipulation techniques
+ Advance the state-of-the-art in model validation


+ Bachelors degree in a relevant technical discipline and masters degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Geological Science, Statistics, or other relevant discipline plus one year or more of experience
+ Experience in computer programming languages such as Java, C++, or Python
+ DOE Q security clearance required


+ PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Geological Science, Statistics, or relevant discipline
+ Demonstrated ability to conduct research and development
+ Experience with remote sensing, geospatial data and formats, or geospatial sciences
+ Experience with complex algorithm development, modeling, and simulation
+ Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development methodologies, practices, and tools
+ Experience working successfully with researchers, analysts, and other software engineers
+ Strong mathematical background
+ Excellent communication skills with the ability to develop and present technical ideas and results
+ Ability to obtain and maintain an SCI-level clearance

Department Description:

The Resilience and Regulatory Effects Department researches, develops, and applies cutting edge analysis methodologies to create science-based regulatory policy solutions. We develop frameworks in which proposed options can be compared and prioritized to achieve system resilience for national critical resources. These complex problems with national significance are addressed by using a multi-disciplinary approach. The department's diversity includes staff with advanced degrees in economics, modeling & analysis, chemistry, mathematics, physics, geophysics, social science and operations research. We additionally partner with experts in other fields internally and externally.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
