We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to engage in the research, design, and deployment of machine learning and statistical methods to solve important data and science problems stemming from the Laboratory's mission spaces. You will work as part of collaborative, multidisciplinary teams (that include mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists, and cybersecurity researchers) to initially support the cybersecurity mission. Techniques you develop are likely applicable to LLNL's broader mission application areas (such as material science, high energy physics, predictive medicine, cybersecurity, climate modeling), and you will have opportunity to collaborate with domain scientists in these fields. This position is in the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division within the Computing Directorate.

In this role you will

  • Research, design, implement, and apply a variety of advanced data science methods for multiple applications in a collaborative scientific environment.
  • Actively participate with project scientists and engineers in defining, planning, and formulating experimental, modeling, and simulation efforts for complex problems stemming from national security applications.
  • Perform foundational research into methodologies of mapping software binaries into low-dimensional space for facilitating various automated statistical analyses, in support of LLNL's cybersecurity mission.
  • Propose and implement advanced analysis methodologies, collect and analyze data, and document results in technical reports and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Contribute to grant proposals and collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment, including academic and industrial partners, to accomplish research goals.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship
  • Ph.D. in Machine Learning, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field.
  • Experience with scalable algorithm design relating to graph analysis and data analysis, specifically design of graph embedding algorithms such as graph neural networks or graph role analyses.
  • Basic understanding of static analysis of software.
  • Programming skills in at least one prototyping language such as Python/R/MATLAB and at least one compiled language such as C/C++/FORTRAN.
  • Demonstrated ability and desire to obtain substantial domain knowledge in fields of application and ability to communicate effectively with subject matter experts.
  • Demonstrated research ability, as documented by publications, reports, and presentations.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills necessary to craft creative solutions to independently solve complex problems.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information to technical as well non-technical audience, document work, and write research papers.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with high-performance computing, GPU programming, parallel programming, cloud computing, and/or related methods.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership in fields related to data science.
