      Job Description

      The Secure Information Systems Division (SIS) in the Cybersecurity, Information Protection, and Hardware Evaluation Research Laboratory (CIPHER) is currently seeking a candidate with five or more years of experience whose primary skills are in the design, development, and maintenance of relational databases using open-source and cloud-ready technologies. This position requires the ability to design, architect, and build databases from business requirements – with a key focus of providing security, performance, and scalability at all layers of the architecture. This entails planning and deployment of these databases in both development and production environments, to include development and analysis of cloud-ready database architectures and cloud migration paths.

      Position involves close interaction with application-layer software developers in order to optimize overall application design, including performance modeling and query generation, review, and optimization. Candidate will work closely with other members of the database team and other developers pursuing adoption of new cloud database systems and architectures.

      Job Responsibilities

      • Design and development of appropriate data structures given business requirements
      • Extensive focus on securing data
      • Database architecture design and analysis
      • Developing and deploying cloud-ready/cloud-native database architectures
      • Implementation of requirements in an RDBMS using SQL and procedural code
      • Develop and maintain codebase of mostly Oracle SQL and PL/SQL
      • Design and develop new projects, and project conversions, using PostgreSQL and PL/pgSQL
      • Performance tuning – including database and SQL query monitoring, analysis, and optimization
      • Debugging in both development and production environments

      Primary Skills

      • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
      • Ability to work independently in a team environment
      • Technical diagnostic expertise including problem investigation, reproduction, and resolution
      • Ability to acquire new skills efficiently
      • Experience writing and analyzing SQL queries
      • Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL (SQL and PL/pgSQL)
      • Proven strong coding expertise using stored procedures
      • Debugging SQL and PL/pgSQL
      • Hands-on experience with cloud environments such as Amazon Web Services (AWS)
      • Design, development, and configuration of databases in the cloud

      Secondary Skills

      • In-depth knowledge of database and query tuning techniques, with focus on performance and scalability
      • Hands-on experience with Oracle SQL, PL/SQL, RDBMS architecture
      • Hands-on experience with Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)
      • Hands-on experience with Amazon Aurora (PostgreSQL)Experience with modern/distributed source code version control systems (Git)
      • Experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) frameworks, such as Terraform or AWS CloudFormation
      • Experience migrating complex database systems from Oracle to PostgreSQL (or similar migration paths)

      Education & Length of Experience

      Research Engineer/Scientist I

      • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical field of study.

      Required MinimumQualifications

      • 5+ years experience in applicable areas
      • Bachelor's degree in relevant field of study
      • Master's degree in relevant field of study or willing to pursue an advanced degree in relevant field of study.
      • Technical diagnostic expertise including problem investigation, reproduction, and resolution skills
      • Ability to acquire new skills efficiently
      • Thrives in collaborative environment

      Preferred Qualifications

      • CISSP or Security+
      • AWS Certification (Associate or greater, any subject area)

      U.S. Citizenship Requirements

      Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

      Clearance Type Required

      Ability to obtain Top Secret Clearance upon hire
